“I have guided you here, so that you might set me free.
“The chaos has ended!
“You will be remembered.”
Thus speaks the mysterious and largely bonkers Baron Fortesque at the conclusion of The Chaos Engine, a video game of great splendidness released in 1993 by shades-sporting programming scamps The Bitmap Brothers. The Gauntlet-esque Victorian-era steampunk blastathon remains one of my all-time favourite run-and-gunners, and the above image of the (not very) good baron was inspired by a thoroughly tremendous book that delves into the game’s creation.
The book of which I speak is The Bitmap Brothers: Universe from ace publishing bods Read-Only Memory , and if you’re at all interested in the wacky world o’ games – particularly those released back in the giddily exciting days of late ‘80s and early ‘90s – I can’t recommend it highly enough. It explores the lives, times and games of the Bitmaps in fascinating detail, and it’s also packed full of lavishly-reproduced artwork by the amazing Dan Malone , whose DA gallery you really should take the time to explore. The multitude of gorgeous images prompted me to pick up my pencils and get scribbling, and this here doodle was the result. Between this and several of my other drawings , it’s clear I have something of a fondness for drawing madly-grinning loony people.
Copies of The Bitmap Brothers: Universe can be ordered directly from the ROM website just over here , and Dan Malone’s ace gallery of arty goodness can be reached via the following handy icon-widget. Hurrah!
