Character designs for my entertainment illustration class!

I designed my characters for a webcomic about a sort of boarding school for magical creatures and those that are magically inclined. My theme was sense and insensibility- we did opposing forces or opposite words! I went with the perspective of insensibility being an anxiety-ridden person, Heidi, who is illogically afraid of literally anything and everything new, but also tries her best to find happiness in the world despite this with a few of her hobbies. Panic attacks are frequent and happen whenever she has to make a quick decision or is faced with any kind of conflict. I tried to incorporate things into her design that would portray her reclusive nature and tentativeness to talk or interact with others, along with her unorthodox choice of clothing in regards to the rest of the students who often wear more muted and less saturated colors. She’s supposed to stick out from the rest in appearance and behavior. Her design is based off of both a lop rabbit and a goat.

The character based off of sense, Julian, is a bit of a mix between the stereotypical jock and nerd, being only just barely included with those of a higher social status. He has to work his way up that ladder and is pretty much the complete opposite of Heidi, doing whatever he can to fit in and prove himself to his older brother and peers. He’s extremely intelligent and knows a ridiculous amount of information, partly because he loves learning as a child and the rest because he wanted to have some sort of an advantage over others in order to establish a sense of security for himself. He’s very logical and is excellent at using his environment and those around him to get what he wants. He first interacts with Heidi after being pressured from his friend group to figure out what exactly is wrong with her because the other students find her exceptionally weird and strange. His design is based off of an owl- maybe a great grey?

Their dynamic shifts after a while, but in a nutshell, its Heidi getting panicked or freaking out over things and Julian having to explain the logistics of it + whatever it might be and convince her that it’s really nothing to worry about.
