Description Andor, the Land of Gift, Númenor of the Kings, Elenna of the Star of Eärendil, was utterly destroyed. For it was nigh to the east of the great rift, and its foundations were overturned, and it fell and went down into darkness, and is no more. (...)
In an hour unlocked for by Men this doom befell, on the nine and thirtieth day since the passing of the fleets. Then suddenly fire burst from the Meneltarma, and there came a mighty wind and a tumult of the earth, and the sky reeled, and the hills slid, and Númenor went down into the sea, with all its children and its wives and its maidens and its ladies proud; and all its gardens and its balls and its towers, its tombs and its riches, and its jewels and its webs and its things painted and carven, and its lore: they vanished for ever.
J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion. The Akallabêth

For #inktober52 prompt "Ancient" I decided to draw the ruins of Númenor under the waves, known afterwards by the name Akallabêth, the Downfallen, or Atalantë in Sindarin tongue.

I am glad that many people made suggestions as to what I should draw for this  prompt, they were all interesting. Some people suggested ancient beings such as the Ents or artefacts like the Ring of Barahir, but for some reason the word ancient reminds me much more of ancient places, buildings and ruins than anything else. So I considered two ancient ruined places from the Lord of the Ring, namely the tower of Amon Sûl and the Seat of Amon Hen, but I was not sure how exactly to draw either one of them.

So in the end one of the suggestions really inspired me to draw the ancient ruins of Númenor under the sea, which is interestingly also named Atalantë.

I  really enjoyed drawing this picture. At first I considered making coloured picture this time, adding some blue watercolour, but then I decided to stick with pen, to leave it simpler. It was an interesting  challenge to depict the soft underwater landscape in this technique.
