That's what I say to most people. I think that they think she is a lad cos when we see where they are after the prologue video and the start of the game all of the others are lads. She does sound like a girl though. But we have no pysical way to tell. Not at one point in the game does she prove she is a girl. ( exept she is better at fighting)
