Hi Justin,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, I 'edited' this image in the interest of creating mood and depth, as I do much of my recent work. Specifically, the important points here were dodging out the red highlights in the foreground to help the flowers 'pop' a bit more, dodging and adding a faint blur layer (research the 'orton' effect, and simiar techniques) to the background peak to increase the sensation of distance, and dodging of the highlights on either side of the peak, again, to help draw the eye. This was all in addition to color and contrast adjustments made to the RAW file. All told, it took about 10 minutes in PS.
Most of my processing work is in the interest of creating a certain depth and mood that I feel eludes the 2-dimensional medium of photography, but is captured to precision by painters who do not suffer the same technical (and other) limitations. I try to walk the line that suits my artistic taste, and create more 'painterly' renditions in photography while retaining natural appeal (in most cases). I edit images to heighten both the visual and emotional experience conveyed to viewers of my work, and offer a sense of what I felt being there as well as what was actually there.

How to get this effect in photoshop - [link]

MarcAdamus doesnt answer comments much...gets too many of them, I guess...maybe I can help you out. I dont know exactly how he does it, but there are several ways to get that glowing effect in a photo. The most obvious is using a diffusion filter. They are often used for portrait shots to enhance skin tones and make the features appear softer. They are not too expensive and can be found in most good photography shops. Another way is breathing on the lens a little during a long exposure shot, towards the end of the exposure. The condensation on the lens diffuses light slightly and makes bright areas particularly fuzzy. If done correctly, most of the detail will be preserved, but the photo will have a nice glow to it. My favorite way of achieving similar results is through post-processing in photoshop. I like this technique the most because it gives me complete control over the image. What I do is duplicate the original layer, set the copied layerΒ΄s blend mode to overlay and gaussian blur it to my taste. After that I selectively erase areas I deem too dark or too bright.
Hope this helps a little, and if you have any questions, drop me a line...

Hi Marc,
What is it that gives so many of your images the 'glow' quality that often seems to me like you have doen something like duplicate, gausian blur and reduce opacity. I dont think it is that since you previously illuded tot he fact that you had only done that (or similar) on your mushrooms image and one other. I only ask because I feel that I am at the stage where I am now in the right place at the right time and seem to see similar conditions to you on occasion, but that X-factor is illuding me, and, whilst I am sure your original files are spectacular, I beleive you acheive this is PP since I do not see it in the work of others.
Thank you
Alex

All photos of mine undergo post processing work, but the exposure balancing was done with a 3-stop graduated ND filter that was moved a tad during the 4-second exposure to reduce the transisition line, which was further evened-out in PS. I wanted some extra emphasis on the features at the bottom of the image.
