Description Following the crowing of Cesare Borgia as Emperor of the Romans by his father and pope, Alexander VI, on the 25 December 1504, the Italian peninsula is nearing total war. The Republic of Siena was the first of the independent republics to fall to Cesare after a short war in which the Petrucci family found itself come to an end with the execution of Pandolfo in Rome in early 1505.

To the south, the Angevine-Franco Kingdom of Naples ruled by the House of Valois-Anjou is surrounded by enemies on two sides: the Aragonese crown in possession of the Island of Sicily who so desperately desire the south of Italy; and from Cesare Borgia in the north with the full strength of the Romagna and Lazio to bolster his armies.

Cut off from the north by the d'Estes of Ferrara and the Holy Roman Empire, Cesare's northern legion remains in Cesena whilst his south fortify in the recently-claimed Gaeta. The Republic of Venice remains isolated in Italy and only uneasily at peace with the empires on their borders; however, expansion has grown in the Balkans as the Ottomans are forced back by the Crusader States in the Levant and the south of Greece.

With a crumbling imperial power in Bohemia and a growing power in Rome, the Italian princes of the Holy Roman Empire risk open war with Cesare's empire or destruction by German princes across the Alps in a longer war of attrition.

The Kings of Savoy and Naples look to the Angevine crown of Arthur I in Paris for help and to join in a coalition to curb Cesare's strength while the Aragonese seek to use Cesare to take Naples once and for all. Will war come to the peninsula?

// So, I wanted to throw something together from a part of Europe that plays a big part into my alternate history. I wanted to start with the broad picture of Italy, but soon I'll get deeper into the intricacies of these Empires and Kingdoms on the peninsula. Enjoy :]

Had Alexander not died in 1503 Cesare would have most likely took Italy

Clearly Voltaire went back in time and had a chat with the Pope.

And Angevine crown.... Anglo-French Union I presume? Bloody hell the HRE Emperor must be pissing himself. An usurper to the South and a bunch of angry former Germans to the west...

I don't know why, but the colors, the font, the style...I just love this so much.

Been on a bit of a holiday! Anyway, I'm using Inkscape for everything right now, but I'm playing around with Gimp.

I definitely, most certainly, absolutely will! I've got at least two other major maps planned out right now for Italy, one of Cesare's empire and another that will be a surprise and in a style I've not done before :]

Needs loads more work to get everything making sense, but I simply am unable to not go crazy with the Borgias lol

It's the Borgias. So it's to be expected.

Did Alexander VI really crown Cesare the Emperor of the Romans? Because I never heard of it. And the Borgias are a prefered subject for me.

As far as I know, he was only ever named Prince of the Romagna by his father. Forging an empire was always the goal, but he fell quite short of that sadly lol

Yeah, it's a shame. There was so much potential!
