Description Okay, I'm in Port Aransas, Texas, right?
And I'm exploring the beach with my cousins, catching fish in a cast net?
And my cousin and I see a dead thing that looks like a stingray floating around???
My cousin scoops it up with his shovel and brings it on land. Turns out, it's not a stingray. It has a tail like a shark's. It has two fins on top and a tail fin?? No stinger at all. I'm able to pick it up without being injured. Note that it is dead. I flip it on its back, inspecting it, and see a small tail sticking out of its- HER - er... fEMALE GENITALIA
So, being the idiot I am, I tug on it and I pull something out?????
IT'S A BABY STINGRAY THING?????
AND ANOTHER???
AND THEY'RE DEAD??
I TRIED TO REVIVE THEM??
WHAT THE FRICK FRACK????
WHAT SPECIES IS THIS???
IF YOU KNOW, PLEASE TELL MEEEEEEE

i really dont know. its gotta be some small ray, because babys have larger fins. the "small tail sticking out of its- HER - er... fEMALE GENITALIA" is actually the stinger, and the fish also has a caudal tail, something rays dont have, but skates do. skates also dont have that shape of those...wing things...

IDK i'll ask my marine biologists about this

Thank you for the input, but I pulled on the "stinger" and a baby came out. Turns out, this creature is a lesser electric ray. Case solved :^)

Definitely not a shark, due to the shape of the head. Definitely not a skate, because skates don't give birth to live young - they lay eggcases (also known as "mermaid's purses"). So I'm going to say it's in the ray family - most rays do NOT have stings, as stingrays are just one group of species within the ray family. Based on the shape of the head, I'm going to suggest it's in the electric ray family. Based on location and markings, I'll narrow it down further and suggest: Lesser Electric RayΒ (Narcine bancroftii).

Oh my gosh, I think you found it! The ray I found looked exactly like that! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

No problem.

My guess is it's a type of spotted Skate - like a distant cousin to rays.

Like WindChill77 said, this is without a doubt a shark. My best guess is a leopard shark. Here's a picture of a newborn pup:Β s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/7… It looks pretty similar to the two babies you're holding. It would also help to know how big the mother was and what she looked like. Leopard sharks usually get to be up to 5, 6 feet max and look like this as adults:Β i.imgur.com/DWwa6ee.jpg Does that look anything like what you pulled from your net?

Ah, I appreciate the advice so much, but sadly, the mother I pulled out of my net was hardly a foot long. It was dead and had a huge hole over one of its eyes, and it was hard to see any defining patterns on it... It's head was flat like a stingray, but it had a tail like a shark's. No barb.

Huh. I'm genuinely intrigued by this. I'll try to do some research and get back to you on it.

Aww, thank you, that's so kind! You don't have to, but if your findings are inconclusive, feel free to discontinue.

Could be one of three species of shark: Angle, shovel nose, or leopard. They all have similar shapes to stingrays & are all quiet small for sharks.Β

I looked up all of them, none of them looked the same. Crap. Thank you for letting me know, though, the search is not over yet.

I think it's a baby stingray

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MangleTehSpiderfox In reply to vaporwavy [2016-07-21 00:33:21 +0000 UTC]

It's not. It doesn't have the long, thin tail of a stingray, or the barb. I was able to pick it up by its tail, actually, without getting hurt.

Maybe the stinger hasn't developed yet? I have no idea what it could be if it's not a stingray lmao
