Description My darling bf dragged me kicking and screaming into the age of e-books by giving me a Nook and, while I freely admit it's handy to always have a large book in your bag that doesn't weigh half a ton, there is something to be said about the real paper book. Since I will be carrying my Nook around I decided it would be better off in a cover to protect it from the dangers of being in my bag... things like keys, pens and other sharp implements tend to lurk there and would badly scratch the screen if the came in contact with it.

I knew I wanted to make a patchwork cover - and I remembered that I'd made these strips of 1/2" hexagons from the scraps of the insane hexagon quilt that I'd originally intended to use as a border on my insane hexagon quilt, strips I decided not to use once I'd worked out exactly how many even more insane mini diamonds I'd have to use to join the strips to the main quilt - so I decided to use the strips to make the cover.

I had to do quite a bit of seam ripping to get the right lengths of strip for the cover + do some creative adding of the hexagons to make the flap. I made it reversible as it seemed a shame to waste the opportunity to do so as it's quite easy to make reversible when you are joining hexagons together by hand.

The entire cover is made by hand and contains 350 1/2" mini hexagons, 175 for each side, the flap is weighted with an old Belgium 0,20 Frank coin I had lurking in a drawer.
It's 6 3/4"/17.14 cm square

The Nook cable has been given a cover of it's own:

This is so gorgeous! The hexagons are a lovely choice compared to the usual squares used in quilts, and the choices in colours and arrangement are wonderful. It's like you have all four seasons in one cover...brown for autumn, blue for winter, fresh greens for spring and those fiery hues for summer

Magical525 In reply to synconi [2013-09-11 22:08:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks

I love hexagons - they are nice to make and are perfect for hand sewing so I use them a fair bit in quilts as well as the more usual squares, triangles and rectangles. I'm glad you liked the way I did the coloures - I'd spent some time swapping them around till I was happy with the arrangement as I only had a limited number of these strips and colours available.

Magical525 In reply to irenenenene [2013-09-11 15:37:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I decided it would be a shame to cut off a bit of the hexagons just to make a straight side seam, especially as it wasn't necessary to make it straight as I was hand sewing it.

I'm with you, I didn't want to join the 21st century of reading.Β  Then, I got a Kindle for Christmas.Β  Before long, I was hooked.Β  Sure, it doesn't have the same feel as a book and I'll never give up some my paper books, but it is great for portability and space and I love instant delivery!Β

You've put together quite a project there with those hexies.Β  I have some that are going to become a couple blocks for a sampler quilt I'm making with a Craftsy class.Β  I'm not afraid of the handwork, since I hand finish my quilt binding, but all these little hexagons just look intimidating.Β  All those tiny stitches.... shudder.Β

Thanks for sharing.

Magical525 In reply to beccascrazyprojects [2013-09-11 08:03:08 +0000 UTC]

It is indeed much more portable, and less likely to get damaged just by being in a bag like the pages of a book. yes the instant delivery is nice - no more waiting for the postman

It wasn't all that bad really - just before I started these I tried making some hexagon "flowers" with 1/4" hexagons... now *they* are small and not so nice to sew, these aren't as bad as they look once you have done a few and have got the hang of holding them. I have to admit I cheated a bit - I didn't cut hexagons out of the fabric - I just used 1 1/2" squares of fabric and wrapped them around the hexagon. and it's becauseΒ  I left the excess fabric in place that I didn't need to add any batting to the cover as it was just as high loft as it would have been if I'd done normal patchwork with batting between. Also: the shorter the length of a seam the less stitches you need to make

I wish I'd thought of that before I cut out my little hexagons.Β  I didn't go buy the hexagon papers, I just made some of my own.Β  The size isn't all that important for these blocks.Β  As long as I get them close, it should come out just fine.Β  I'm going to have a chance to work with them tonight, so we'll see how it works out.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Magical525 In reply to beccascrazyprojects [2013-09-11 22:01:30 +0000 UTC]

There is no real right way or wrong way - just ways that work and it's different for everyone I have to watch my hands so "cheat" where possible at cutting

Yes if they are close they will come out fine - English paper piecing is fairly forgiving I hope it al goes well tonight!

Thanks for the hints and the support!

I managed to get about 8 hexes basted down over the paper pieces, so not bad.Β  I was doing a bunch of other stuff, so I think I did okay.Β  I think my papers should have been just slightly smaller, or the fabric just slightly bigger, but still workable.Β  They'll end up appliqued to a block, so the seam allowances won't be under too much stress, so being a little less than 1/4" shouldn't be a problem.

Magical525 In reply to beccascrazyprojects [2013-09-13 08:47:20 +0000 UTC]

You are welcome If you get stuck please do say so and I'll do my best to assist

That is indeed not bad - it takes getting used to the fiddlyness of wrapping fabric around paper, sometimes (if the hexagons are large enough) it helps to use a couple of paper clips to hold the fabric in place while you baste With hand sewing it's not as important to have that 1/4" seam allowance just as long as it's more than 1/8".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

beccascrazyprojects In reply to Magical525 [2013-09-13 20:58:52 +0000 UTC]

A couple of them looked somewhere between 1/8" and 1/4" so I wasn't too worried.

I was putting a single straight pin in along two opposite sides to hold it on there until I got a few stitches in.Β  Sure, it's just basting, but I didn't want to get around to the other side and have to start over.Β

I've got so many other things going on that this may just have to wait for a while.Β  Not forever.Β  These will make up the last couple blocks of a big project.Β  Can't keep that in the UFO pile forever.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Magical525 In reply to beccascrazyprojects [2013-09-14 21:49:55 +0000 UTC]

That sounds ok then

If it works go with it there is no "right" way but basting is important for this and any mistakes in basting can cause issues later.

It's funny how stuff keeps happening that's more important - reducing the UFO pile is always a good thing
