Short-billed Dowitcher

A medium to large shorebird with a long bill, the Short-billed Dowitcher is a common and conspicous migrant that uses a "sewing-machine" method of foraging across the mud flats. Its long bill is short only in comparison with the very similar Long-billed Dowitcher.

Photographed at Malibu Lagoon State Beach

Hello.

Great shot!

These birds are actually Willets with a Marbled Godwit in the Background.

Cheers,

D.

Ryan is right about the species but a nice series of captures nonetheless.

I see these species commonly during migration but they don't show us their winter plumage here in the northeast.

For some reason, I'm hearing a Jerry Springer soundtrack to this.

Very cool shot.

No Short-billed Dowitchers in this image though. Leg color, eye line, and bright white wing pattern tells you the two birds courting are Willets. The out of focus bird in the background is a Marbled Godwit.
