Congratulations on the most 'unexpected shot' of the year!
The title matches this picture perfectly as both, You and this little guy have popped into one another in complete surprise.
The power of this shot lies in its simplicity but also in the amazement that one can feel in the air when he or she takes a closer look into this image. I am photographing nature myself and I know how hard it is to take a good picture of animals or inverterbrates. This element which grasps attention here is the unusual 'pose of the model'. The details and colours are not given much exposure, but still it's not what is crucial in this shot.
All in all, I wish You more shots like this, which would be almost humorous to see and presenting animals in an original way, like we don't often get to see them.

I'm glad you are branching out into wildlife photography. Your landscapes are marvelous but photographing wild animals is a true challenge. Unlike trees and rocks they don't sit still and they seldom do what you want them to.Β

Funny and natural-looking and that pose is the best! It looks like that squirrel would be smiling what makes me want to smile and it has even snow on it's ears!
