Description Commissioned lineart for a new shop on Gaia called 'Sands of Ra'. I just made up some sort of hawk/eagle/falcon things-- this is the lineup, minus the egg stage. I like their feets!

You'll have to contact the owner of the shop on Gaia to get one.

It's a breedables shop on Gaia. You can google it. I think it's closed now, though.

Do you have any advice (good books or something) for one who want to learn how to draw wings and don't own an owl or a hawk to look for reference?

Find a zoo nearby, or some good reference photos!

Anyway, thans for reply

Everyone always wants a book, but the truth is there is no substitute for learning from life whenever possible. However, Floyd Sholtz has some books out specifically on birds of prey and owls for the artist, which include photographs from angles you almost never see. These angles show details on the birds that are difficult to see in most photography. [link]

Ha! I finally found you! You do all the pin designs for the Canadian DI teams right? I love your art and love your pins. (I designed all the phoenix pin series, flutterby, spirit wolves, leopard/tiger pins you may have seen in previous years so you may sort of know who I am.) These eagles are fantastic and were my favorite pins from that year, by the way.

Are you coming to globals this year? I would love to meet you!

Hey! Cool to meet another pin designer! I think I have seen some of your pins. I'm not actually involved with DI much myself-- I'm an old friend of someone involved in the Ontario team's organization, and so I've done these for his sake each year. Let me know if you're ever in the area, though!

Well... I am dating someone living in Ontario at the moment so there's a chance haha. It's too bad you're not more involved! DI is fantastic. I'm an alumni of the program but I love the pin trading so I come down to globals. It's really fun to see everyone's response to your pin art You should come down sometime just to see.

I may do that! I've been invited a few times, but it's very difficult for me to travel with how busy work is. I'll chat with my DI pals about it, maybe for next year!

I see you're involved with raptors as well. That's incredibly cool. I'm applying to veterinary school at the moment and I would love to work with raptors. I applied to the University of Guelph as one of my possible schools though I'm still waiting to hear if I have an interview or not. If I do, I'll certainly be in the area. How did you get involved with raptor work?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lyosha In reply to Aracosena [2011-01-22 00:07:59 +0000 UTC]

At the University of Guelph (graduated a few years back), with the Wild Bird Clinic (now 'Wild Ontario'). There are captive, non-releasable birds that are looked after by volunteers-- almost all of who are students at the university. I volunteered with that program for years, and still have close contacts with them-- then I got hired at a nearby raptor centre, and now I manage it. I'll have you up if you end up interviewing at UoG.

do you know of any bird that might resemble the second one from the left? The golden one? I know you made these up, but I was wondering if you knew of a bird species that looked similar to that one. It's so beautiful, I love its colors~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lyosha In reply to Whisper820 [2010-12-27 00:03:52 +0000 UTC]

The colouring of that one was inspired by a mix of Ornate Hawk-eagle and Red-tailed Hawk-- but no, there's nothing that looks really close. Ornate Hawk-eagles are amazing, though: [link]

Whisper820 In reply to lyosha [2010-12-27 00:22:38 +0000 UTC]

ah, I see how you were inspired by those. I thought Red-Tailed Hawk at first, but I wasn't sure what else was in there. Ornate Hawk-Eagles really are beautiful though, thank you for the link!
