Description Given that most of the people I talk to haven't heard of Gilbert and Sullivan, this'll take some explaining ...

In G&S's opera "Iolanthe", half of the characters are fairies and the other half are mortal ... with the exception of main character Strephon, who is fairy to the waist and mortal belowdecks. His mother, Iolanthe (as well as all of his fay aunts), being immortal, looks to be about 17. This leads to some serious issues when his fiancΓ©e Phyllis (an orphan and a ward of Parliament) finds Strephon fondly hugging a 17-year-old girl ... within a few minutes, Strephon is in complete ridicule by the entire House of Peers and Phyllis has promised herself to whichever Lord wants her.

Strephon summons the fairies to help him, and the Fairy Queen comes up with the perfect revenge: she puts Strephon into Parliament and announces that he will pass every bill he proposes - even a few bills that will take away the privileges the Lords hold so dear. That's what I drew, scanned, colored, and posted above.

Nice! Who cares if she has a spear, still looks good. The opera sounds very interesting. I think I will have to look at it sometime or something...

Oops - I finally took the time to read through the libretto ... seems the Queen should have a spear. Ouch.
