Description
Still behind, but I finished week 4 of Demontober, an art challenge started by indragonsaur .
The demons for this week that we have here are Pruflas, Buer, Adrammelech, Vepar, Abaddon/Apollyon, Vine, and Moloch.
Purson (a demon who IS in the Ars Goetia, which has 72 demons) is listed here as Day 22, but the image I used is also interchangeably used for Pruflas (a demon who ISN’T in the Ars Goetia, but rather the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, which has 69 demons). Either way, his appearance is based on Louis le Breton’s illustration of a lion-faced man riding a bear while blowing a trumpet. I also made his face look vaguely human-like to add an uncanny valley effect.
Buer is pretty much the same as his traditional depiction (a lion head with five goat legs), though I added a third eye on his forehead to give that otherworldly feeling. And he’s somehow a president of Hell.
Adrammelech is pretty much the same as he’s depicted traditionally and in the Shin Megami Tensei series, aside from a few little details. He’s also a president of Hell, that happens to be a drag queen with a donkey head and peacock feathers (I’m not making this up).
Vepar is supposed to be a mermaid, but I saw an image on Getty Images titled “Faceless Merman emerging from the sea”, and so I decided to build it up from there. The fins are based on a merrow from DND, the tail legs based on an old engraving of Triton, and the shroud covering him inspired by the aforementioned stock photo as well as Ultrakill’s ferryman. I originally had him holding a mirror, but then I felt like combining it with a trident because it would look cool.
Abaddon/Apollyon is said to be destructive, and he leads a horde of monstrous locusts in the Book of Revelation, so my first instinct was to make him look insectoid. My inspiration consisted of actual locusts (of course), his design in Darksiders, an illustration by Wayne Barlowe, and the dark elves from God of War 2018.
Vine is depicted as a lion wearing a knight’s outfit, and holding a viper. The coat of arms he’s got is obviously a lion.
Moloch was actually sort of trickier than I thought, but I’m satisfied with how he turned out in the end. His design takes cues from some old illustrations of giant statues of him, his design in Darksiders Genesis, and the usual Minotaur. He’s also quite fat, probably from eating so many children sacrificed to him.
I’m currently unsure if I could finish week 5 on time, but there’s only three demons for that one, so we’ll see. Nevertheless, I wish everyone a happy Halloween!
