Description 'Polyphemus'
Acrylic paint on 30" x 22.5" canvas.

I took a photo of a Polyphemus moth a few years back and decided it would make a nice painting. Besides, how could I resist? I love giant fuzzy bugs!

On the down side...FUUUUUUUUuuu elaborate antennae!!! My hand is crampy from painting all those little hairs. But on the bright side....GLITTER! I take advantage of any excuse to use glitter in a painting.

Mm, delicious subtle colors. I thought with elaborate antennate you can use, like, Bob Ross tricks to imply all the texture...?

Where do people find these great oversized smileys to use on DA? I love them.

Bob Ross!
yeah, had it not been such an extreme close-up i would have gone more impressionistic with them for sure.

the oversized smileys are "plz" (please) icons. people create dummy accounts so they can use the user avatars/icons as emoticons.

One of my favorite moths! They're so fuzzy! I love the glitter and the antennae! This is wonderful. You did a great job on it. the wings especially.

LOL! Luna moths and Cecropias are the two largest moths in Missouri, where I live. I love those bit fuzzy moths!

yeah, it's the same here in Ontario. i haven't seen a Luna moth in a long time either. they're not as pet-able as the Cecropias but i tend to chase after them anyways.
they're just so damn pretty!

Lol. My husband and I found a luna moth caterpillar this fall. It was the fattest thing I've ever seen!

luckyraeve In reply to RainyDayFun [2011-01-15 01:28:49 +0000 UTC]

i just googled 'luna moth caterpillar' and OH MAI GAWD! they are so fat AND florescent!

hmmm...it looks like i gave my moth the wrong name.
although the Cecropia is similar to this moth, my moth is actually a Polyphemus. i should have looked that up on the interwebs instead of relying on a super old wildlife book.

RainyDayFun In reply to luckyraeve [2011-01-15 15:28:45 +0000 UTC]

Huh. I haven't seen a cecropia for years and didn't question it. Now that you mention it, I DO remember a few differences in the wings, but I didn't when I first saw it. It's still a really cool picture.
