i don't like taking pictures of 'real' people - you have to ask for permission and what not

Somewhat true but when they are in a public place...shoot at will. As long as you don't use their image for profit a model release isn't necessary and they are fair game.

i do like pictures with a story, but one has to get close to the people - it is too much of an intrusion

yes, there are people who like to take pictures of people, and manage to capture unique moments (a story).
