Description First in a series of personal paintings inspired by a number of things:

a. Blackfish
b. Mermaid Forest
c. Roderford's poem - Guiseppe...

My Uncle Giuseppe told me
that in Sicily in World War Two,
in the courtyard behind the aquarium,
where the bougainvillea grows so well,
the only captive mermaid in the world
was butchered on the dry and dusty ground
by a doctor, a fishmonger, and certain others.

She, it, had never learned to speak
because she was simple, or so they’d said,
but the priest who held one of her hands
while her throat was cut,
said she was only a fish, and fish can’t speak,
but she screamed like a woman in terrible fear.

And when they took a ripe golden roe
from her side, the doctor said
this was proof she was just a fish
and anyway an egg is not a child,
but refused when some was offered to him.

Then they put her head and her hands
in a box for burial
and someone tried to take her wedding ring,
but the others stopped him,
and the ring stayed put.

The rest they cooked and fed to the troops.
They said a large fish had been found on the beach.

Starvation forgives men many things,
my uncle, the aquarium keeper, said,
but couldn’t look me in the eye,
for which I thank God.

they are very erotically wriggling and suffocating without water before the cook starts to cook them.

No we left - lot's of reasons. Firstly we got a letter through the post which basically said 'fuck off English'... that wasn't great. But also France has some big problems and we decided that if we stayed it was time to stay 100% - i.e. apply for PR move our tax over etc... but it's really hard to get through the French bureaucracy and even though my wife speaks good french it's not easy to get answers to questions etc... Also I am pretty worried that Marine Le Penn will get in next year - especially as Fillion has just shot himself in the foot! I don't know about your political leanings but Marine isn't a big fan of foreigners

Hey what's your facebook - I've started a critique group with some other good artists - would love to see what you've been up to.

Damn, this letter sucks! Where are you now, then? My brother in law is currently in Quebec and it seems to be a great place to live if you're not afraid by cold.
I share the same worries about France and this year election. Yes, Marine would be a french Trump and Fillon (who had some good ideas and others I didn't like... well...as you mentioned) is over. It doesn't let a lot of choices. Emmanuel Macron could make the surprise but I don't trust him....
Anyway, I'm sad to hear that a foreigner that loved so much France ends up giving up due to my country decay.
About Facebook, I ditched my account a year ago I think for many reasons and was happy with this decision but your critique group is tempting, as I feel a bit isolated art-wise. What's the facebook adress, I may use my wife's account to check this. Everything that I do is on DA and I'm starting to wonder if an Artstation account could be useful since I'm not a professional.
Talking about art, it's been a while since I've seen your work, what did you do since then?
I hope you're fine.

Stéphane

I think it would be super cool for you to be in the group - there's a lot of good artists-  it's very small and people help each other out. The problem with concept art.org is that the quality of the submissions and the critiques has really gone down hill. I never turn up there anymore these days - except for checking out the jobs section from time to time if I don't have anything on. It would be great to see you in the group - we run art challenges and stuff and the other thing I've found really helpful is hanging out with other artists - it's like a virtual art studio - it really helps with art motivation when everyone in the room is busy working away - sometimes you can be like 'meh' I can't be bothered to do art but when you turn up and hang out with other people it's great - Plus you make art buddies which is cool.

I have an artstation account - I don't know how helpful it is all this social media stuff... I mean who knows right? I always apply for work and if my work is good enough and my costs match their budgets then I get work and that's it - I've had the odd occasion where people have contacted me out of the blue but it's not the norm.

What's your wife's account? Add me as a friend on FB and I'll add her to the group - I'm kelvin liew and I have the same profile pic as you.

This....is an AMAZING looking mermaid!!  Wow!!  I SO love exotic looking mermaids like this where the upper body is full of aquatic features, too!  Marvelous job carrying the texture & markings of her tail up her back to that awesome looking Fin! She'd look exotic with webbed fingers, too!!  She's such a beauty...hope to see more like her!!

Hey man - thanks for that - am working on part 2 or really part 3 as I'll also paint her in her natural habitat swimming and having a great time (before getting captured).

Never thought about webbed fingers - maybe for some other mermaids... I don't think it really fits this particular species ? lol
