I was always perplexed when I saw on the Pokémon anime where Ash's Bulbasaur didn't want to evolve because it was never explained why it didn't want to which was annoying as it would of been nice to know why but that's why I prefer the game to the anime as you can choose what Pokémon you want to evolve in whatever way.
