Description I had the opportunity to take photos of Hiroshi, a world reknown violin maker. When I found out that I would be shooting him, this is the first image that sprung to mind. Each instrument takes years to complete from commission to final product. And each piece is like a baby that he nurtures and then sends out into the world with a life of its own. I asked him to take this pose and i did not even have to ask him to have a calm and peaceful look...that was his natural inclination.....as if he was praying over his work. Incidentally, this is actually a viola....for it is a bit bigger, therefore just a bit more visually impacting.

The start of a series about roles and their inextricability from identity.

Hmm...I'm looking for a new viola. Maybe by Hiroshi? I'm not familiar with makers' names, but I do like it when luthiers make their violas with the sloped, cut-out shoulders as opposed to the traditional violin-style ones.

Maybe....

Anyways, excellent picture! I always love seeing violas in the wild .

Wonderful portrait. I think by placing him in the garden you accentuate the organicness of a violin and/or music.

the sepia tone adds a nice "historic" feel that - to me - helps convey the timelessness of this wonderful art, and this artist.
The setting is also great, too... one who works in wood pictured in a setting similar to where his raw material comes - it's a great "big circle" thing... i don't know if that's what you were going for, but something i noticed (being an aspiring carpenter )

i think you really captured the intimacy and delicacy of what he might feel about his own work.
there is almost a music to the photograph itself.

Wonderful composition in this one.

The expression on Mr. Hiroshi's face is incredible. He really seems proud of his work, and like you said that's the way he truly feels about his work. I think the tones add an extra meaning to this one...
Awesome work...

this is beautiful, in capturing the link between the craftsman and his craft. the sepia-type tone combines those two elements and makes both stronger. to me, this man lives with the knowledge that his craft will outlive him, which pleases him as it proves his life has had true meaning and purpose.

ps: for a violin, it looks odd to me, as most violins today are copies of what stradivarius perfected, with rounded shoulders. this one looks slightly scalloped, and larger than usual.

it's perfect, my only reservation is that you DID use the viola, I would have thought a violin would've been better, just they look smaller & more fragile... But other than that... perfect Sepia gives the impression of an old faded family portrait, nice little addition.

His poise is indeed mesmerizing. He cradles the viola in his arms like a baby and the look on his face is not only serene but seems to me like that of an endearing gaze a father bestows upon his offspring when he is holding them in his arms. You also choose to surround him in the wonders of the garden - instead of cropping the shot to just focus on him we see the nurturing world around him. It is tranquil and peaceful - something one can always find in a Japanese Garden. Something that is in the background could have added more to the photo if the environment had allowed. I am speaking about the stepping stones that stop far behind the gentleman. Tis a shame they did not continue right up to him where he was sitting for it would have added a subtle nod that with the completion of any creation many "steps" are needed to be taken.
