Description Advice for n00bs: Comment sections on Profile pages

I know it’s hard to understand how things are done in a community when you’re new. Once you’ve stayed around long enough, you get a sense of the unwritten rules that everyone obeys. But when you’re new, the only way you can learn is through embarrassing trial-and-error. Maybe someone’ll take screenshots of your hilarity.

However, it’s annoying to other users (i.e.: me, I’m talking about me) to have to deal with someone who doesn’t know how to act, and it’s hard to explain things without playing the “I’ve been here longer, you shall listen” card.

Well fuck you, because I’m playing that card (and if you’ve been here longer than me, feel free to ignore said card and tell me if what I’m saying is a load of crap in the comments (I’m looking at you, SawnikBewm)).

So listen up n00bs, because I’m going to tell you, from my experience, how to act in the comment sections of people’s profile pages.

---------------

Let me start off my saying that your own profile page’s comment section is not somewhere for you to comment. Commenting in your own comment section is so n00by, words cannot describe. So no more “Hi, I’m new here!” or “Please look at my gallery!”. That’s what journals are for.

Now that’s out of the way, I’d like you to imagine that everyone’s profile is like their home, and the comments section is like a special conversation-room. In this room, many conversations can be had at once, everything said is heeded by the owner of the house, and you can see the ghosts of past comments. You’re also free to wander round and look at this person’s house, because they’re cool like that.

If you want to talk to this person, and you don’t mind other people being able to see your comment, you need to wander into this room. Since all comments are heeded, a polite “hello” and then the subject of your conversation is acceptable if you’re a stranger, or whatever you know is personally acceptable if you’re a friend. If you’re new, why not look at past conversations to see how the person reacts to different situations.

This is the part where I’d like to address the subject of spam. You don’t necessarily need to be an actual spambot or post lots of comments to be spamming. Things like chain-messages (“IF U DON’T POST THIS U WILL DIE!!!111”) or asking for things from random users (“Please commission me!” “Please give me llamas!” “I’ll watch you if you watch me!”) is spam, in a way, and it is not acceptable. You’ve just run into the conversation-room, waving your arms and shouting, and then run out again. Imagine people’s reactions if you did that in real life.

Moving on, imagine you’re having a conversation argument with someone somewhere else, like another user’s profile, or a deviation, or even notes. Another thing to remember is to keep that conversation there. Don’t go onto the person’s profile page and continue it there (“From your comments on ______’s deviation...”). Conversations need to be kept in the place of their subject, or the place that they started.

Another thing to recognise is the dreaded “Thanks for the fave!”. Posting this on everyone’s profile of the people who fave your work could be considered spamming, in a way. Remember, you’re running into the conversation-room, shouting, and then leaving. If you must do this, take some time to check out the person’s profile first. They might have a sign asking you not to thank them for things. After all, why should you? Faves aren’t usually given as a favour, or something that needs to be thanked. It’s usually a selfish act – the person likes your work, so they favourite it. They might not like you or anything else about you.

So that’s about all I can think of for the moment. You’re probably expecting a nice little conclusion here, something to wrap everything up. Well, I fail at conclusions, so no.

Interesting. Since many people thank me for faving their deviations, I'd have thunk that that was something one had to do here. I've always felt bad when I neglected thanking people... Now I'm confused as to what is the "desired" behavior. *scratches back of head*

I'd say just do whatever makes you comfortable, whilst keeping in mind the wishes of the people whose pages you're posting on. Always make sure that they don't have a "Please don't thank for faves" sign, like me. Personally I think that thanking for faves is nothing more than spam - you're sending the same message to many people, regardless of who they are, and without the intention of promoting a meaningful conversation. However, some people appreciate being thanked. There is no overall "desired" behaviour.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. You are definitely very clear about that on your page! I'll keep an eye out in the future and maybe instead of posting a meaningless "thanks" I'll just hand out Llamas and take the time to make useful comments. I guess even people who like being thanked like it even more, if you actually "talk" to them instead of just "yelling" a quick thanks, right. So thank you bringing this issue to my attention! I'll be a nicer deviant thanks to you. orz o^___^o

Btw, to be honest, I was a bit shocked that "thanking" would be used as "self advertising" - I'd have never thought that people would have such "unpure" motives behind what should be a nice and polite gesture. The world is an evil place. TT-TT

I don't thank people for favorites but I thank them for llamas O.o

Because quite frankly, I don't know what to do about that.... O.O I don't understand llamas, so I'm just like "Thanks... for the... thingy" lol. I also thank people for watches because I like, don't watch people back unless their art is decent so.... yeah..... OuO

I like your unwritten rules of deviantart there. I agree with them. A friend of mine posted a full length journal addressing similar topics and some more for newcomers on DA which is here, in case you are interested. (Pardon for the link)

It's really disheartening to see young kids spamming their own front page or deviations with their own comments. As the girl who wrote the journal put it. "It just looks awkward and desperate"

Honestly for those that ask for watch and free points and shit, they are in for a rude awakening when people don't take too kindly to their shit.

...darn.

Anyway, I've never begrudged people for putting "thx for fave" comments on my Profile page. I recognize that it's a form of self-promotion on their part, but I don't really see anything wrong with that. But if someone has a message right there on their page in big-ass fucking letters that says "DON'T THANK FOR FAVORITES HERE"...

I guess it's kinda like those signs that say "please wash your hands after you use this restroom". Anyone decent enough to do it was going to be considerate even without the sign.

.......wait a minute, people ACTUALLY post on their own comments section with "Hi I'm new here" D:

the only thing I don't agree with is thanking for fav's ...i always thank strangers, I don't thank my watchers, and if their is a sign that says "don't thank me for favs" I then thank them with intent ...because I'm a bitch like that

LordMaddie In reply to MichiIzkurEreshkigal [2012-02-07 20:30:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm not trying to say that people shouldn't thank for faves, I'm saying that if you're going to go around doing that, you could at least have the courtesy to check if poeple want you to first. Blatantly ignoring signs... Why would you do that?

I always check out the person's gallery, if no time I always check out the page in it's entirety.

because I am a bitch.
I don't know if I could be any clearer.

I hate when people post those chain mail. I even had to post a little note on my main account that I don't do those.
