Once again, Asenath23 has created a wonderful scene from my version of "The Phantom Menace". You can find more of her work here: [link] Trapped on Naboo, seperated from the other Jedi and wounded by a pre-cyborg General Grievous, Barriss Offee and Senator Conradin run into Droid Commander VGR-001, a rather enlightened Trade Federation droid who tries to help in the politest way possible. When its logical mind is confronted with programmed orders to shoot, VGR (my nod to Star Trek: The Motion Picture) chooses not to, and let's them escape. Conradin and VGR will eventually become good friends through several stories.Related content

VGR-001, Droid General of the Separatist cause, walked by, inspecting his troops as they prepped for invasion of Toydaria. Β Many of the droids looked at VGR with some confusion as he gave the small speech, addressing them in a grave manner. Β It was still early in the war, and many neutral planets hung in the balance.
Though VGR's voice was the same tinny level as theirs, the fresh troops were able to ascertain that VGR was not the average cheap robot of the CIS. Β He marched in deep red color, a single black stripe on his thin head, granting him the rank of General, and VGR would brook no clownish antics from his men.

The Last Cold Day In HellAuthor's note: Β There is some mature content in this story, while not explicit I wrote it to be about intimacy and not to be offensive. Β
Plus, this story is a 3rd "Barrisoka" installment, a sequel to "Dark Gift for Palpatine" and "The Greatest Journey", and it is a bit darker than the previous stories. Β It's a little longer than the other two but it was a story that got into my head to write.

I like this, the battle droids are my favourite characters in Star Wars, especially Post-Naboo where they actually have personalities!

Yes! I have always had some sympathy for them and wanted a droid character who was better than just being a clown. Very glad you enjoyed this

Well not all the droids are clowns, the B2s aren't very talkative and are way less "stupid". The Magnaguards are intelligent and so are the Commando droids. But the problem with them, unlike the B1's, is they don't have personalities.
The B1's, despite being cheap and flimsy, have personalities and don't like being destroyed. I often wonder how come in certain SW:TCW episodes the clones/jedi destroy the B1s when they are unarmed. Infact, the only time a unarmed B1 didn't get destroyed for no reason was in that one episode in the "Ryloth" arc. Remember the one where Waxer and Boil picked up that little twi-lek girl? And how in the next episode there was a droid cleaning one of the cages and Obi-Wan locked him in there and instead of destroying him? Thats the only time a unarmed B1 was not shot/sashed in half for no reason. I kind of feel bad for them, as its obvious they don't like fighting.

True, not all the droids were used for comedy, but it felt at times that the combat droids were made to have ridiculous dialogue early on, and droids in general were always viewed as second class beings no matter how intelligent or thoughtful they might be. Of course, after the Clone Wars nobody was going to fully trust droids in general because of the stigma.
I was rather happy with the writing of VGR-001. He gave me a chance to really create some sympathy and humanity in a droid character.

True, I like the tactical droids, but they were rather mean and underestimated the others. I love the B1s, the B2S are bland.

My Saga stories are in my gallery, in special folders off to the left. Stories 1-8 are a retelling of the Prequal Trilogy with my interpretation. It's in script form which I did back in 2005-08 when I tried to think of how I would do my own cinematic versions of Episodes I,II, and III. I did it before Clone wars became a bigger TV show, so Ahsoka does not play a big part (though I tried to fit her into it after they introduced her to the Star Wars fans)
The stories are:

4) The Approaching Storm
5) Attack of the Clones
6) The Thorn Ascension
7) Reversal of Fortune
8) Revenge of the Sith
There's a lot to read, so take your time and enjoy. I have two Sepratist droids I became fond of in this series, VGR-001 and 888 (His friend Conradin would call him "Three-Eights") I also did more with the droid R5D4 from "A New Hope". I don't know why, but I thought I'd do more with him, and there's a running joke about his bad motivator through some stories.

I just read past this scene! Very great story! I already like your version of Phantom Menace a lot more than the original. Lucasfilm/Disney should hire your as a creative consultant. You have a very even grasp on the antagonist and protagonist point of views.
I am so glad that I read your explanation post before getting any further in your stories. A lot of things make a lot more sense now. I sort of tell myself that I am reading the same timeline but in an alternate reality... sort of like a reboot of the trilogy. You know, like how Star Trek was recently rebooted with the same characters, some new ones, and a lot of alterations to things like personalities and major plot points. Your 'alternate' version is WAY better so far.

I had hoped to create sympathetic characters on both sides, plus I didn't always like how the droids were always portrayed as clowns. i wanted at least one or two who knew what they were doing.
I saw so many possibilities with this trilogy, I could not stop my fingers from putting it together!!

I too didn't like the droids always being shown as clowns. I really enjoyed the Onderon story arc in the clone wars because it involved that droid general who finally seemed to have some independence and the ability to make intuitive decisions.
