Maybe Big Mac likes dresses because he wants something pretty because he works like a- well, workhorse everyday andΒ he possibly likes the idea to be refined and strong, make something with ease instead of busting his hump all the time to get more from his effort. Or he just wants to be a southern bell and admired (he did dream of being an alicorn) so perhaps he desires some sort of thanks,Β be idolizedΒ or a greater deal of protection for those he cares for.
Dream or not,Β Big Mac wants to be a princess, the stoic arboreal princess.

Orchard Blossom might also be a reason as to why he's so quiet now. It could be he doesn't like how low his voice is so he stays quiet because he doesn't like voice. I can just see Mac saying to everyone "i like girly things, so someone best get me stuff from Rarity's Boutique." Like seriously, Blossom would have a freakin field day in the Boutique. No pun intended, lol. Β

maybe the show is trying to show how big mac has been treated as the big masculine stallio is trying to show he isnt all tough but rather has a sort of feminine side to his character or rather he likes pretty things.

I for one am one hundred percent here for transgirl Big Mac. Β Regardless of whether or not there's a gender binary in Equestria, I do believe that transgender ponies would exist.

considering equestria appears to be populated by 70% females, it would make sense also for gender lines to be blurred or nearly nonexistant in their culture. they may have very little concept of such a thing. unrelated to this, a pony being a lesbian is most likely unheard of as well since its probably necessary for mares to be with other mares in order for society to function properly so there isnt an over-demand for males. conversely i would be lead to believe that males may not even be necessary in the reproduction process at all, since its a magical land where magicly produced babies are probably common. therefore the upholding of "masculinity" is probably unnecessary, but still welcomed for those who wish to participate in it. otherwise feminitity embraced from all sexes is acceptable and normal.Β

I'm also going with "they probably weren't thinking that, but genderfluid Mac is cool." And yes, it is awesome that they let someone so "manly" have no problem with things "girly." No shame about it at all, whatever he is!

I totally understand what you're saying and I agree with you I love the same stuff too I like seeing men dress up and be more feminine and with themselves and I would really think be awesome if you didn't want to work with Big Mac in that way but whatever you decide I still think your work is amazing

I doubt the writers were thinking that deeply, but Mac not being completely het/cis is definitely an interpretation that I've entertained, myself, and would fit with what we see. Of course, that's kind of the point behind the whole "manly man does girly things" trope. For good or bad it makes you question their orientation and/or gender identity because they don't adhere to the masculine stereotype. Sometimes it's used to point out and make us laugh at our own expectations and sometimes it seems more "look at the funny guy doing girl things." It's definitely my headcanon - and arguably actual canon - that Big Mac is at least gender nonconforming, though.

I think in the world of equestria mares are considered the "dominant" gender, seeing as they value their princesses so much and we see more mares than stallions in the show. Adding that with how Big Mac feels like he's just some plain old pony I'd think this points out more that he wishes he were special rather than him wanted to actually be a mare.

He did seem very comfortable as Orchard Blossom, in my eyes. And why not? We all want to feel pretty/beautiful/insert descriptor here once in a while. Maybe this was his way of not only bonding with his baby sister, but feeling pretty for a while.

Ehh... not... really...
How to explain... Okay, we see big mac become an alicorn and a princess, correct? But he doesn't become a mare. So, he attribute alicornism, if thats the phrase, to power, and has respect and reverence for the title, not to the gender. Which means the title of Princess applies to both stallions and mares as ruler supreme (I believe there was a woman who took the title of King somewhere in the annal's of history)

I like that in the end the judges knew he was actually a male and were seemingly ok with it. If anything it seems those ponies are pretty tolerant to gender identity. That's what I got from it any who

While I think your analysis is valid, I think it was more about just a guy in a dress.
I think it was more that he was trying to be what he imagined was the perfect, most feminine southern belle he could, the stereotypical southern belle, and he wasn't good at it. A tad out dated too, like how you would picture in the old western movies. If he was just being himself in a dress, it would be different, but it was more like he was doing a really bad Scarlet O'Hara impression on top of the outfit and the other ponies could tell that it was a really bad fake impression.Β
I think it was funny because he was putting on a really bad act, and they knew it.Β

The crowd's reaction after Mac's voice drops during the singing competition in the episode was really interesting to me. The expression of the majority of the colts softened into smiles and actually commented on Mac's ability with statements like "Impressive range", but for most of the mares their uneasiness never faltered and the most clear dialog was a mare's "Did his(?) voice just... I don't know" is the most clear.
I think the episode's underlined theme is "a man in a dress can't fool a real woman" attitude, which I do see as transphobic. While I do like it does add more evidence to the possibility that Big Mac is trans, it wasn't handled very well so I think it's "just a joke". I wish there was more acceptance portrayed in the episode, and not just tolerance.
I do think Orchard Blossom looks really cute.

I would respectfully disagree with your analysis. It's a valid interpretation, but my personal suspicion is that the writers want to use the 'manly man doing womanly things' trope - consider Bulk Biceps in Rainbow Falls with the cheerleading outfit. That said, it is entirely possible that the writers have planned this and are doing this knowingly - consider that Big Mac has grown up in a female-dominated household, and Equestria seems to have more female than male ponies. It is equally conceivable that it is a part of his character as you suggest. Any interpretation is a possibility, given that we seldom see the thought processes of the writers, and it is the results to which we pay more attention. Also, Equestria is your world too. You are free to analyse and interpret how you will, given that nobody is coming to harm from it.
