The filmmakers were, of course, hindered by the restrictions of the technology of their day, but what you do see of the Gmork is very scary.

Just G'Mork's face was enough to haunt my nightmares. And for some strange reason, I always thought his name was 'Morgue'...

He does look really creepy. He probably wouldn't be as creepy if he had been a CG character.

It scared me though, I was really young then.

My pleasure! There are many, MANY things you could illustrate from The Neverending Story, but I think this scene is strangely overlooked.

Really? I didn't really think it would be over look. I mean a wolf lunged at a kit in an attempt to kill him. Then again, there are racing snails, luck dragons, rock biters, and many other fantasy things in the world of the Never Ending Story.Β

I think it's because the other creatures are featured much more in the movie, than the Gmork.

There was a two-season animated show, which dealt with the further adventures of Bastian, and then there was also the Canadian live-action "Tales From the Neverending Story." Avoid that one like a veneral disease! I couldn't even get through the first episode.

Atreyu's attitude is; we're gonna die anyway, and you've been looking for a fight. Here I am, so let's fight!

He was not. He was so heavy that Noah Hathaway was nearly knocked out. Not only that, but apparently the way the puppet landed, Hathaway was mere centimeters from getting his eye scratched out by one of the claws of the thing. So they decided not to risk a second take.

I read an article about the making of the movie in Reader's Digest way back in 1984. I got the impression that all the puppets were quite heavy due to the way they were constructed. It's strange, because you can compare them to the puppets of The Dark Crystal (made a couple of years earlier), which are pretty expressive, but much more mobile and light weight. Just different ways of crafting stuff from different creative teams.

I'm going to assume it's partially due to the Creature Shop not being available at the time, or else would have been prohibitively expensive, as, from what I've heard, at the time, The Neverending Story was the most expensive movie ever filmed outside of the two superpowers of the time.

During the later 1980's and 90's quite a few American FX studios perfected monster suits and puppets, but during the making of "Neverending Story" it was still a bit trial and error.

I guess that's true. Watching behind the scenes the puppet required several controllers just to move his face.
But i still wished his demise was given more dignity considering (in my opinion) he was the most memorable character in the movie.
Seriously, every sentence he said was just chillingΒ

The Never Ending Story was a good movie, I enjoyed it even though it was made for kids. It had a good plot that told a important story about life while in a world of fantasy.

It really did, and I think it holds up well. Michael Ende who wrote the book hated it, though.

I'll never forget the Gmork's words about what giving up on hopes and dreams can do to a person. Even today, I refuse to associate being a 'grown-up' with turning into a bitter, cynical wreck. Otherwise, the servant of the Nothing will be biting into your soul and tossing you around however he wants to!

"..but now I have put away childish things." Yes, such an attitude towards life will turn a person into a cold fish indeed. Funny that this wisdom was related to us by the villain of the movie.
