The Photo

A good friend of mine had asked me to take some shots of him playing a grand piano on the Dalhousie Campus. For a couple of days we set up shop and snapped away. This is the first of two shots that I enjoyed the most.

We were lucky to have a rather large room that allowed for movement, and a massive white backdrop used for a video projector that could be placed in the background. Early shots showed a wooden wall behind him and the piano - with the high contrasts of the polished piano it just didn't work. The white fix not only this problem, but added more light so I could shoot at a slower ISO speed.

This also gave me a chance to try out my new camera, a Canon 20D. On the lens for this shot is a 17-40 L f4, so it comes out to a 28mm after cropping. I have to put my foot in my mouth for going back to digital - but I had to sell the medium format - it is just too expensive to do film when you're a student. One of these days I'll be back with multiple film backs!
