Description Once upon a time, there lived a brother and sister named Hansel and Gretel. Hansel and Gretel were born to a poor family in a time of famine. Days would go by and their stomachs would twist and knot in hunger. One day, the siblings went outside to scour the forest for berries and small rodents. While rummaging through the forest, Hansel stopped Gretel. “Sister, do you smell that?” Gretel sniffed the air and the smell of thick pastries, buttered bread, and sweetened meats flooded her nostrils. Saliva trickled out of her mouth as her brother pulled her arm, moving towards the the scent. It wasn’t before long that they stumbled upon a house with the door and windows open. “Hello?” they called out, to which nothing replied. Quietly, they peered into the house and found a table furnished with delights from around the world. Instinctively, they ran to the table and began to devour all within their reach but no matter what or how much they ate they were not sated. As the table emptied, Hansel pouted. He was still hungry and he set off for the kitchen in hopes of finding more. In the kitchen, he searched the refrigerator, the pantry, the cupboards, everywhere he could think of. Alas, there was one place he hadn’t searched yet. A warm glow began to emit from the oven and Hansel tried to peek through the glass to see what was cooking. Unable to see anything, he opened the oven to get a better look but as soon as the door opened, a sharp burning pain shot from his back and legs. Hearing her brother’s screams, Gretel ran to the kitchen to find a woman holding a knife covered in blood, and her brother’s body, or at least what was left of it. The woman lunged for Gretel and raised the knife but Gretel grabbed hold of her wrist before she could strike. Using all her strength, Gretel wrestled the knife out of the woman’s hand and gashed her neck. Gretel walked to what was left of her brother and stared pitifully at his remains. She reached out to Hansel’s face but before her fingers could graze his cheek, a ‘ding’ came from the oven and the air was filled with the smell of cakes and cookies. Her stomach gurgled and a pang went through her body. She thought to herself, ‘It’s better to not let anything go to waste.’
