As Genine re-entered the lab, she switched off the portal generator.

A sudden burst of light streaked through the laboratory, rendering Genine unconscious as she tumbled to the floor. In the blink of an eye, the portal disappeared, leaving behind a main console adorned with the ominous message "MALFUNCTION," its bright red letters flashing urgently.

Simultaneously, Marie, a young Hispanic medical student standing at 5 feet 4 inches, was en route to her workplace at the local hospital. Given that it was a Friday, she opted for a more casual attire, donning blue jeans in lieu of the usual black trousers or skirt.
While strolling along, she couldn't help but perceive an odd sensation beneath her feet. The ground seemed to possess an unusual combination of crumbliness and squishiness. Glancing downward, she observed her feet, now coated in a layer of dust, and pondered what she might have inadvertently trodden upon.
