Description
The puffin's distinctive bright beak only develops during mating season, and is used in courtship in a process called billing. This presumably strengthens the pair bond and is observed on several occasions even after the initial courtship. Adult puffins come onto land only from April to July each year for breeding, and spend the rest of the year out at sea. After fledging, juveniles make their way to the sea under the cover of darkness, and may not return to land until they've reached breeding age, which takes about 5-6 years.Wales/April 2013
