Russian Spetsnaz soldiersSpetsnaz is an abbreviation of, "Voyska Spetsialnogo Naznacheniya". which means forces with special tasks. It is impossible to make a direct comparison between Spetsnaz and western Special Forces, since their organisation, structure, tasks, equipment and operational procedures are very different from their western counterparts.
Various Spetsnaz forces come under the command of the Ministry of Defence (GRU), State Security Forces (FSB, SVR, FPS, FPO) and the Ministry of the Interior (MVD)
