Description Well, I wasnt sure wether to post it in the main gallery or not. It will still go to scraps sometime though. Because I'm not quite satisfied with it. Then again, its my first oil painting!

It was an experiment to see how oil paints would work for me. Turns out, I still need a lot of practice! But I think thats only more then logical. Maybe I should start with acrylics first... Dont know if they work easier then oils. If anyone has experience with that, please share.

It was still wet when I took the photo so not all details are visible and thats why there's a little glare on the paint.

Oilpaint on canvas, 40x40cm.

Acrylics dont blend as well as oils. I prefer oils as you can work into them as much as you like

I like acrylics. Don't have much practice on oils. I like the cow, though.

COW!!! lol. XD I don't like oils! They take forever to dry and they don't blend well for me. I love acrylics though! I suggest you use those. but only you can really decide.

True, I found the blending very confusing. Not all like pencils... I want to try acrylics next. dont when yet, but the result will be uploaded!

Lol, a cow he's great, I really like the deceptive simplicity of the colours (it looks like just black, white and blue, but when you really look properly, there's quite a bit of variation in tone) and the bright blue background. It has a modern edge to it. You did really well with the blending eg on the forehead and the underside of the head, I can't blend oils to save my life XD It's so hard! I can see the subtle wrinkles on the neck too, very nice work Are you planning any more oil work?

Talk about a late reply...
The black and white certainly wasnt as easy as it looks! But then again, so wasnt the whole oil paint thing. Much harder then I expected. Especially the blending part. But somehow I did find it fun to do. Might try acrylics soon. Who knows, you never know what you're gonna find in my gallery!

And a late reply-reply! LOL
Variation is good
I found the oil really difficult to blend because instead of getting a smooth transition, it was just obliterating one colour when I tried to brush on the next. Mind you I was just using them straight out of the tube, don't know if that makes a difference or not. Maybe one day I'll learn how to do it properly for now I find acrylics much easier!

i certainly didn't expect to see a cow in your gallery! but i'm not surprised at how well you tackled the task. you got the shapes down perfectly and there's a nice clean feel to the crisp black and white. i think the blue you used in the bg adds to that. it's cheerful somehow.

I do know if you want acrylics to work like oils, you need thick acrylics and then prep the canvas like Bob Ross, using 'liquid white' or 'liquid black' on top of your gesso or pre-prepared canvas. It gives you more time to work the colors and blend them. Might be a good way of learning how to work with oils without actually getting the oils out? I've never actually worked with oils, this is all based on observations I've made over the years.

That's a brilliant painting. I'd happily hang it on my wall

it's beautiful in a simple way

my experience with oils is that they're very frustrating! It's good for people that like pushing paint around, getting them into the exact position and mixing it just right. Acrylics are frustrating because it dries so quickly, much like watercolours, and you need to work fast, but I like it that way.

Oils are difficult, but I like how they work. Very VERY different from pencils.

I started doing oils recently, and I'm totally in love with them! It's very different from acrylics in that it's a lot thickerm more controllable. But some brands of oils are quite liquidish as well, so make sure you get good stuff. You can get a lot more nuances and different shades with oils because they don't dry so fast, which makes it possible for the colours to keep blending together as you paint, while acrylics just dry, and if you paint over, well all you get is the new colour, and no blending.

Mooi gedaan, Linda !

I prefer acrylics... they dry faster, so you don't need as much patience. I've heard oil is harder to use, but I think it depends mostly on which you've worked with more.

Great painting... I love cows. ^_^
