Description I started this sculpture without any direction as to what it would be, I had just purchased a large piece of Manzanita and wanted to work on it. I started removing bad areas of wood hoping for some inspiration to hit me or something to reveal itself, when nothing did after a couple of days it was put away in the garage rafters. After about five years and three of those not doing any art I felt like creating and was looking in the garage and pulled it out and still with no direction just started carving away wood trying to make flowing interesting shapes. After a failed attempt at finishing it with Tung Oil which left it very dark and looked terrible I had to remove enough wood to go deeper than the oil which is a penatrating finish. I then began sanding again and with the advice of woodworking legend Sam Maloof who lives close by I sanded to a very fine grit and burnished it, then only wax was used to finish and protect it (Thanks Sam).

Strange, I remember favoring this one a long time ago and I don't see the green/black fav' mark on it anymore. Ah well... Here it goes again (^v^)

I just ran across your beautiful carving and really like it. When reading your notes I saw you had to find a finish that worked. I did a few similar carvings and found a finish that worked. 1/3 watco oil, 1/3 boiled linseed oil and bees wax. I heated them together and applied warm. It dried hard but when polished hard , the warmth would bring up the bees wax and it would shine. <rpete38.deviantart.com/art/car…
I also found that exposure to the sun turns the wood darker. Happiness Roger

Truly beautiful work. It is always amazing to me when a sculptor can produce something that transcends the material from which it is sculpted. Well done.

It's a wonderful piece you have here. Shame about Sam Maloof, lets raise a glass to him next time you go for a drink, he made same really spectacular pieces. Unfortunately lived across the globe from me, but I thank all my friends for their advice in woodworking in the same spirit!

Beautiful abstract well done. Manzanita is one of my favorite wood it has beautiful color and character. When I not carving Fairy houses, I work alot with twisted juniper which is in the cedar family, and also has great color and character just like manzanita. Great job!!

wood is such material that does not gives you calm, you never know what is hiding in some piece of wood until you finish the work. of course, sometimes is good to know when the work is finished1 nice, you are wood man!
