I live less than 20 km from the spot where this slab of ancient footprints was discovered. Each summer I drive all the way from Seattle to Wyoming to conduct research in the Eocene Bridger Formation. Ironically I live on top of sedimentary rocks of virtually the same age. Unfortunately exposures of these rocks are very spotty. This area of Washington State is densely covered in coniferous forests and impenetrable fern thickets. This specimen was recovered from a quarry near the town of Black Diamond, Washington. The community is so named because it once had a viable mining industry that dug up Eocene aged coal. Since the discovery of these footprints the quarry has been filled in and closed.

Sandstones such as this slab are sandwiched upon the coal beds. This one preserves numerous track ways of Eocene shore birds. It is about 2 meters in length. It is on display at the Burke Museum at the University of Washington in Seattle.
