Description I took a ton of photos of this sculpture to post to my class, so I thought it would be fun to share a little step-by-step progression of Nax.

The finished piece can be seen here:

Check out the Ebay auction: www.ebay.com/itm/261597289207

1- I did a lot of brainstorming and sketching before I even began sculpting this piece. I went through several different ideas and concepts before I finally settled on a corgi/butterfly hybrid. I sketched out a general pose idea to use as reference when creating the sculpture.

2- I built the armature using thick gauge wire and foil. It is not shown here, but I also reinforced the balancing leg and torso with Apoxie Scuplt for more stability. You can see here I originally has the armature for the wings attached to the body, but after discussing it with my instructor, I decided to sculpt the wings separately and add them in later.

3- The main body shape was blocked out using a mixture of Super Sculpey and Sculpey Firm. I was unhappy with the size and placement of the head here, so ended up cutting it off and re-sculpting it entirely.

4- Here I have added all the details on the corgi, and you can see the placement of the head looks much better now. I did not go crazy on the fur texturing, instead choosing to add in bits of fur in key places to give him a fluffy appearance.

5- The completed sculpt, primed and ready for paint. The wings were sculpted out of Premo Sculpey. Premo has a slight "give" to it that made it a more idea choice to use for the very thin wings. The antennae have also been added using wire with a bit of clay at the ends.

6- And now with paint and base details! I use Ceramcoat acrylic craft paints to paint my sculptures. The entire piece was sealed with Testor's Dullcote for a matte finish, with the eyes, nose and mouth glazed with Varathane's Polyurethane. Pearl-Ex powder was also added to the wings to give them a nice shimmer.

If you like seeing progress photos like these, I post a lot of them on my Tumblr( leiliaclay.tumblr.com/ ) and Instagram( instagram.com/leiliaclay ) accounts.

Amazing!! He's so cute
I was wondering how you got it to balance like that? I notice you have a wire holding it up at one point, but then it's gone >,>

Thanks so much! There is a small amount of wire running from the balancing leg into the base which helps with stability. I didn't make it quite long enough in the particular sculpture, so he wasn't able to balance by himself for long periods of time. Once everything was completed, I used high strength epoxy glue to give the final hold.
