Description Inspired by my new book Patton and Rommel: Men of War in the Twentieth Century by Dennis Showalter. If you love to read about either of these men, or about WWII, or about war in general and the minds behind it, READ THIS BOOK!!!!! *faints, dreaming happy dreams* ^^ Beautiful.

-----------

The machine gunner sat back with a heavy sigh and looked out beyond his post wearily, having just traversed up broken ground with one of the lighter machine guns at hand. At this point, the gunner wouldn't believe that statement if it were flogged into him, with the beast weighing over one hundred pounds. His vision swimmed for a moment, then refocused as the gunner realized his mission once more - to scope out the area and pick out any targets he found below. The other men would not be far behind him, traveling doggedly up to their own points along the mountainside, armed and ready for the enemy to make a error. Romanian foothills were new and difficult terrain to use open-plain tactics on - the machine gunner's lieutenant discovered that early on in the foray and made his own plans. A small hint of doubt nibbled at the gunner's mind about whether to trust this generally young yet astounding new lieutenant and his original, maybe even hair-brained ideas, as those kinds of ideas in a battle could mean death, but his respect for the man's prowess ultimately decided whether or not to follow his orders. Lieutenant Erwin Rommel was a man to be respected, out of all things.

The gunner pondered his situation as he looked down from his post to the heavily forested foothills farther below and then the vast plain that spread out before him in a beautiful panorama, with a few more mountains mirroring the landscape a few miles away. The brilliant scene around him almost made him homesick for Germany - everything was so similar, yet so different...

Suddenly, a rustle from the bushes behind him made the gunner spin around, pulling out and aiming his reinforcement pistol at wherever the sound came from. Haende hoch! (translation: Hands up!) he cried, rising to his feet, only to stammer into silence by a gentle, rumbling growl. The gunner froze, then began to shiver as he slowly put his pistol back in its holster.

The shadow in the trees above him paused for a second, considering the bipedal animal with a tilted head, smelling it audibly. It then almost seemed to nod its head with a soft snort and turned to continue walking past him, soon lost in the gloom of the hardwoods. As the gunner continued to stand, frozen by the odd sight, he noticed other strange, horse-like shapes moving in the dark, spines and strange plated necks shifting as the forms plodded by and faded.

Unfortunately, the machine gunner was never able to recount his story to his comrades, as his post was soon shot out by a group of Romanians who broke off of the main battalion before the battle commenced, undetected by anyone.

The ghosts of Romania will always have room for one more in their ranks.

This is a really neat idea (if I'm understanding it properly, that is). It's almost as if the dragons are the ghosts of Romania--those who have died and become dragons.

The curiosity of the dragon upon seeing the gunner is astounding. It's awesome that you can put such subtle emotion into your artwork.

It isn't that great, but thank you... and I meant this picture to have many meanings, though I didn't think of it when I first began to draw it. ^^ *chuckles and hugs* Thanks! ^^

art and a story to go along with it always help so that the viewer can get more involved with the emotion of the piece

this is a great combination of writing and visual. Both reinforce the other very well. The story's ending definately leaves a haunting feeling. Bravo!
