Description Or, for those of us who can/could never memorize scriptures by just repeating them over and over verbally.

Three things before I start:

One: if you would like to know what kind of learner you are (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic/tactile are the main ones.) you can go here for an assessment.  I really suggest doing this because knowing what kind of learner I am has helped me immensely in studying.

Two:  This method will take up quite a bit of paper, so use scrap paper, or when school sales roll around, buy some packs of notebook paper.  You can usually get them for about 50 cents.

Three: Sorry this is so long.

First off, we need the scripture we’re going to memorize.  I’m going to pick a short-ish one for an example: 2 Nephi 32:3.

This method trades off between saying the scripture aloud, and writing the scripture as you say it aloud.

(Wait a second!  We have to say it out loud?  Yes.  For these reasons:  1. By using both visual, verbal, and kinesthetic, you use most of your brain just for this purpose, so you won’t become distracted as easily; 2.  Saying it aloud will help with verbal recall.  If you don’t practice saying it aloud, you’ll trouble when you recite it.)

Like most memorization methods, mine splits material into smaller sections.  A section may be different for every person.  Just read the scripture and divide it into sections that you feel you will be able to remember at one time.

I will go through the process with 2 Nephi 32:3 using italicized text for when you should say a section aloud and bold for when you should write it as you say it.

First we’ll read the whole scripture, aloud, to get a feel for the scripture and then continue on to the memorization process:

Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.  Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.

Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost;
Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost;
Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost;
Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost;
Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost;

wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.
wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.
wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.
wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.
wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.

Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.
Wherefore, I said unto you,
Wherefore, I said unto you,
Wherefore, I said unto you,
Wherefore, I said unto you,
Wherefore, I said unto you,

Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.  Wherefore, I said unto you
feast upon the words of Christ;
feast upon the words of Christ;
feast upon the words of Christ;
feast upon the words of Christ;
feast upon the words of Christ;

Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.  Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ;
for behold, the words of Christ
for behold, the words of Christ
for behold, the words of Christ
for behold, the words of Christ
for behold, the words of Christ

Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.  Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ, for behold the words of Christ
will tell you all things what ye should do.
will tell you all things what ye should do.
will tell you all things what ye should do.
will tell you all things what ye should do.
will tell you all things what ye should do.
Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ.  Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will teach all things what ye should do.
______________________________________________

So, the process is this:
1. Read the entire scripture aloud
2. For the first section: Read the section, write and say it, read again, write and say it, read again
3. Repeat step 2 for the second section
4. Write and say the scripture from the beginning to the end of your last section.
5. Add a new section, repeating step 2 for that section.
6. Repeat step 4.
7. Repeat step 5.
8. Continue until you reach the end of the scripture.

Notes:
- For longer scriptures that have many verses, omit the first verses when writing and saying the scripture from the beginning.  Start with the verse just before the one you are working on.
- You can also type instead of write if that works for you.  It may not work not work for everyone.  Although it does work for me, as I have just found in typing this, I still prefer to write is by hand.  I’m a tree killer.
- This process of repeating is something I developed after learning about Graduated Interval Recall .  It’s not as complicated as it sounds, but in light of this process, you should try to recall the scriptures you are memorizing more than just your learning time.  After you have first learned them you should try to recall the scripture frequently and decrease your frequency as time goes by.

Holy cow! I have always had a tough time with memorizing scriptures! I can't wait to try it soon It's much better than the approach my Seminary teacher sometimes uses... "Ok guys you got 5 minutes to memorize the first verse!" But those songs are might catchy...

Thanks a lot for taking the time for this
