Description I took this from a boat on the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón in south eastern Iceland. The lagoon borders Vatnajökull National Park. It's waters are dotted with icebergs which have broken free from the surrounding Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, part of the larger Vatnajökull Glacier. The blue colours of some of the icebergs is a sight to behold. They really are this blue. Some of them, like this one, are very large.

Great photograph. Have you any idea why these icebergs appear blue? As far as I know, ice is colorless and would reflect the colors of sea, sky and sunlight in equal measure. The result should be white.

LawrenceCornellPhoto In reply to abrahamjones [2018-11-06 21:34:59 +0000 UTC]

The blue colour of icebergs results from the interplay of light with dense ice, ice crystals, and algal growth. The ice comes from glaciers and is extremely old and very dense so has very little in the way of air bubbles or pockets and doesn't have reflective surfaces like simple ice from your freezer. . ... The dense ice absorbs longer wavelengths of colours, such as red and yellow (from the sun) and colours of shorter wavelengths, like green and blue, reflect the light back out so they appear blue. Once they start to warm up and absorb air the blue colour fades quite quickly.

Thanks very much. I very much appreciate your detailed reply. I had in mind the icebergs seen drifting past Labrador and the mouth of the Gulf of St Lawrence. Not a hint of blue, or only the very barest suggestion.

LawrenceCornellPhoto In reply to abrahamjones [2018-11-07 17:14:53 +0000 UTC]

My pleasure. I assume they have been floating for a while so have taken on some air which seems to be the key to them losing colour. When the air gets in them it makes the ice less dense and allows the light to react differently with them.
The guy on the boat I went out on was really helpful with his knowledge of the ice and how it behaves.

My thoughts exactly. By the time they approach the mouth of the St Lawrence, icebergs are still quite spectacular but a good long way from home. Hardly in the bloom of "iceberg" youth.

FanTastic shot, Lawrence!! !!!

EDIT:  Also, its blue color... I notice it's a gray day, so it's not the reflection of the sky which gives it it's wonderful color... Any idea what produces that?
