Description
Two transports and a shuttle landed in the bright, warm meadow around two kilometers from the Rebel stronghold known as Bentu Base. Reconnaissance had shown the base to be at the best, crewed by the bare minimum of personnel. What the Imperials found after the march was exactly what their leaders had feared.

"Sir," said stormtrooper RL-4023. "Computer records have all been destroyed." His report came after the bulk of the forces had spread out, finding room after room, complex after complex devoid of Rebel forces and technicians.

"I should have known," Lon Revecc said with annoyance. "Recall the troops. There's nothing here." He stood, hands on his waist, looking around the command center, then down at part of a dismantled com-scan unit. Kicking it idly as he thought, the General turned and pointed to the floor. A black-uniformed young officer rushed over and placed a holoprojector. Kneeling over it, Revecc keyed in Commodore Altori's channel and waited for her image to appear.

"General Revecc, I trust you have good news?" she asked, anticipation coloring her voice.

"I do not," he replied, trying not to sound disrespectful to his naval counterpart through his supreme anger. "The Rebels have flown! They haven't been here for days."

"I see," Altori said thoughtfully, shifting her weight. "Is there anything of use?"

"Not a thing. Whoever their commander is, he's good," Revecc told her. The tone of his voice made the woman's holographic eyebrow raise.

"Lon, do I detect a hint of respect?"

"You may indeed," he responded as he stood. "It's been a long time since anyone has gotten clean out from under me. I intend for it to be the last, though. Revecc out." He tapped the little control with the side of his boot just as Altori's image took a lazily familiar move into something resembling attention for a polite salute.

"Sir," said the red-shouldered Stormtrooper. "The Rebels had to have left something."

"You'd think that," Revecc told him as the three of them strode out of the command center. "But this Rebel, whoever he is… No, he wouldn't do that, unless…"

"Unless what, sir?"

"Unless he thinks like me, commander," Revecc said with renewed vigor. Snapping his fingers, he pointed ahead. "Have your men converge on the staging area. I have a notion of how to determine where they haven't gone."
