The Black Rose

He left it outside my bedroom door. I knew it! The others, they were wrong. He never did die!
The rose was as normal as ever. The petals were as soft as velvet and its stem sprinkled with tiny thorns. However, it was as black as onyx. Despite the dark color, it glimmered with rainbows when it hit the sunlight. His note was underneath; complete with a full apology for not being here, a wish to see me again, and his signature.

I carefully placed the note snugly between the pages of my diary and gave the rose a long sniff.
It was like nothing I had ever experienced, it smelled like no ordinary rose. My head filled with the sensation of bliss, passion, and longing. I cried with the beauty of it. It wasn't a scent, but emotions that welled up in my heart and out through tears.
They thought I was crazy for thinking he was still alive, they even tried to show me his body to prove it! But look now, a rose for his lover and a signature as evidence.
I laid on my bed sheets for a long time, holding the black rose to my face and breathing in the intense feeling that overwhelmed me. I smiled through my weeping, this must be a promise that someday we will meet again, even though he had left long ago as a soldier in a foreign land.
Suddenly, my breath was turning into short gasps until it stopped altogether.
Nothing was coming in our out and I panicked. Throwing the rose at the wall, I flailed for air. My chest hurt like a horse was pounding it's hooves against my lungs.
Red swallowed my vision and I grasped my swollen throat in desperation.
Soon, it was over. The pain ended as my heart stopped.

A breeze from the open window disintegrated the cyanide-inlaid rose into a pile of ash as I left this world for Sam's.
