Description Drawing of Tony Jaa, star of Ong Bak, pretty awsome movie.
It was created using Derwent Drawing Pencils on medium grain cartridge paper.
For anyone who is interested Derwents new range of drawing pencils are excellent, they are very soft and waxy, much softer than normal pencils and they allow you to do great blending work with them.

Alright!! Our South-East Asian action heroes need more love, and that is more than what you've given with this outstanding piece. I love the raw emotion in his face and the stunning muscle definition. Excellent work on the tassles and other fabric, and good choice of background colour too!

That is a very awesome movie! Not too well known, at least not here in the states. Good to see a tribute of such a great martial artist. I especially like how you did the ropes around his hands. Great job!!

Great job on this. I'm doing Tony myself, you're right it is a great movie and I can't wait for the next one. As far as Derwent Drawing pencils... they're the best. I just did a portrait class on them. So I've been able to convert some into the world of Derwents.

Peace,

I really like the colors you were able to achieve with the pencils. Can you tell me the average layer count for something like that? I am trying to learn to use colored pencils, but i seem to just end up with a muddy mess. I am using prizmacolors.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ktalbot In reply to Toukee [2006-08-04 16:51:23 +0000 UTC]

I usually only layer about 3 or 4 colours maximum, also usually colours of a similar hue such as blending browns and pinks for flesh tones. If you mix to many different colour together you end up with a muddy brown colour.

Toukee In reply to ktalbot [2006-08-05 01:33:05 +0000 UTC]

Ok, thanks for that tip. Like you said, i end up with too much, and it's muddy. I will try and make it up with less layers, and a better color harmony for each layer.

very nice drawing. If u want my critique than here it is: The drawing has a very clear light sorce, the rendering is done well. Awsome flesh tones. Forshortining is good as well. The figure's left upper forearm seems a little small but doesnt really bother me because it strengthens the forshortining of the form. It may have actually been like that, but just seems a little off. My only other critisism is in the anatomy of the chest. the figures left pectoralis seems too small considering the definition of he's other muscles, and also seems a bit misshapen considering the placement of the nipple, and the perfect 60 degree angled line that runs from the bottom of the sturnum to the arm pit area. Im accutally not quite sure if that line i mintioned is the end of the pectoralis or if it is the muscular shape that parallels it below it. If the later is the case then it seems perhaps u have merged the serratus or upper portion of the external oblique into the pectoralis. If it was from a photo or movie still i would have to see it to be sure. It is possible i suppose for his pectoralis to actually be shaped like that but it would be an oddity if it was. The only other thing that seems somewhat odd is the shape of the trapezius, again on the figure's left side. Seems to bulge out a bit too far. Again, would have to see your refrence to be exactly sure. But all the above mentioned things are just little detail things. All and all AWSOME DRAWING. and in color pencil no less. I am quite impressed, as color pencil can be a beast. please come visit my deviant and comment.

Yikes thats the longest critique ever. Thanks for all your comments, you obviously know your anatomy. As far as I know it is accurate to Tony Jaa's physique, it was done from reference although I could be off a bit, I was going to add a link to the photo but I the website I got it from now.
