They are on their last legs.

Sooner or later, the Empire will finish off whatever that is left of the resistance.

- from the discovered Interview Transcripts, entry #8 -

"...Most would think that her ears were simply bitten off, or perhaps lost in some kind of unfortunate incident. Those who had the latter opinion turned out to be nearly correct, for it was not simply an unfortunate incident; it was part of a tragedy."

"I browsed through a collection of pictures I took from when I was there, witnessing the battle from afar. Amidst all those cruel yet realistic depictions of war, one picture in particular caught my attention. It was the aftermath of an artillery barrage on a position not too far away from my camp. A platoon, or what's left of it, was trickling across a field, scattered with abandoned headgear, guns, and occasionally bodies and tiny flags. I could imagine them pondering around, wondering just what kind of misery had befallen them, ever since those border incidents some months ago. ... Within that unfortunate parade of lost souls, I could somewhat realise some certain familiar faces - and she was one of them."

"In fact, she was the first one I realised, due to her face nearly facing the camera. It seemed as though she realised that somebody was watching her, across the land of death and the fog of war. Her right ear was chewed off - my suspicions were true all along. This poor soul, along with her platoon and many others - fell victim to an ambush by the Empire's deadliest Immortals*. She was fortunate to only have an ear sliced off by shrapnel; others were not so lucky, it was a slaughter that she managed to escape from."*

...

"Some nights she would sleep, but some other nights she would simply refuse to sleep, asking her companions to leave her alone, as she stares at the midnight moon. Sometimes, one could hear her mumbling a certain set of names in her sleep, if they could bear her squeaking and groaning for certain hours. And there was... this one occasion, that I found her drawing this one symbol - one certain symbol, on the walls of her room. She stared at it, and after some time, kneeled and prayed before it, all the while she was quietly sobbing. Even Tewi couldn't help but imagine just what tragedy she had to go through."

...

"As for me. Ever since I escaped from the hellish place I once called my homeland, I still harbour some resentment toward my actions. But in the end, my devotion to my master, along with my realisations of whatever I had created and brought upon my homeworld, only serve to vindicate those actions. Those who had come here and sought refuge at House Houraisan are treated no different from traitors, as far as I'm concerned. So be it. All the lives that I have saved from Lunarian "mercy" and brought here are justified. Let it be known that we simply wanted peace where peace was non-existent, and suffered for it. And because of that, Gensokyo... was our only option."

Collector's notes: this manuscript was found, along with several others by accident, in a secluded bookshelf originally reserved for storing handwritten invoices, within Kogasakata's first workshop in the old quarter of the human town. An anonymous figure delivered this to our organisation's headquarters in a sealed box (with Kogasakata's stamp outside, so as not to create suspicion) , with a note explaining the circumstances in which the manuscripts were discovered. It seems that these manuscripts were all written in secret, since they were all signed by ... no one else but a "Hieda (along with a symbol resembling a flower with nine petals)". This one, in particular, was also captioned "Interview with Ms. Eirin" at the top. As for the seemingly abandoned workshop, it was closed down the very next morning.
