I cannot accurately express my love for this piece, but I shall try.
Thylacines = awesome.
Anthro thylacine drawn by Korrok and shaded in so lovely and smooth with a stunning background to boot = mega awesome!!
(And I didn't know that about the tail bones, but I checked the comments, you know, in case I said something stupid I tend to try not repeat it. I don't really care if it's a bit "off". Looks like a damn thylacine to me )

Not to be a know-it-all, but Thylacines are/were almost entirely incapable of bending their tails. The thylacine tail bones are fused together so that they form one long bone. If they did bend their tails, it was only very slightly.

Yes, I know. Please see the numerous comments above. It's getting a wee bit frustrating that people are repeating this....

Very awesome depiction of a thylacine anthro! n.n
I love the palette you used, very well executed <:3
Aren't their tails more stiff, like that of a kangaroo? at least at the base.. *shrug*
The coloring on her near shoulderblade make it look like her arm should be pointing back rather than at her side. I'm very impressed by the background :3
So good to see more naturalistic thylas about X3

Yep, thylacines had stiff tails. But after drawing her with a stiff tail, taking a little artistic license to improve the composition seemed appropriate. I do think the tail should have had a less rounded tip, though, with hindsight.

I love using colored pencils on top of markers! Nothin' like it.

Are copic markers any better than prisma markers? I've some say yes, and others say no. What's the difference?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Korrok In reply to OnyxWolf [2006-06-02 20:32:44 +0000 UTC]

I definitely do not like them as much. I think it might depend on your style more than anything, but I am trying really hard to get hold of Prismas at the moment. It's just that it requires ordering from the US, and I can't afford the import tax right now. Anyway, the ink consistency and laydown is the biggest difference. I don't know exactly how to describe it, but I think that people who work with markers *only* would find them better to use? They're better for shading and laying down. Which I don't really do.

great job on the anatomy and realistic face, but arent thier tails suppose to be non-prehensile?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Korrok In reply to HyenaKlown [2006-06-02 18:49:55 +0000 UTC]

Correct! But it's artistic license on this one because it made the composition nicer.

I'm amazed so many people haven't heard of them!

They became extict in 1936, and are also known as Tasmanian Tigers/Tasmanian Wolves. Wiki article on them here: [link]

This is a beautiful piece, though the head is more 'doggish' to me, and not as long or as 'top heavy' as it possibly could be. Thylacines are often just drawn as dogs, but they really look quite 'alien' if you study the pictures. Very long muzzles, and extremely wide mouths / jaws when they open their mouth. I also felt the tail should have a pointed, and not rounded tip. As the thylacine tail tapers to a point, and is not soft and fluffy, like a big cat's tail. It's more wiry.

I LOVE the background, gorgeous colours, but I felt more that I was looking at an American desert, instead of an Australian one. Perhaps because Thylacine bones have been more commonly found around granite outcrops (which are grey) and dense bushland, instead of yellow brown / sandstone outcrops. But I'm a fussy bitch, you don't have to listen to me.

I think the curve of the spine, and the placement of the stripes is awesome. This is a great anthro depiction of Thylacine.

Korrok In reply to Ravenari [2006-06-02 08:42:02 +0000 UTC]

I'd done a fair few sketches of real thylacines before doing this, and I think the difficulty is in introducing a disproportioned head onto an anthro and still having it look attractive, as was the intention here. I've worked from photos of taxidermy, old photos and of course stills from that infamous video of the last thylacine in captivity. Though to be honest, in my observation they're not that "alien".

I have to note on the background as well that rather than actual accuracy of thylacine habitat I wanted to go with something with very "Australian" colors (the orangey-red). Makes it more identifiable, I think. In particular as I wish to sell this piece....

Anyway, thanks for the comments! Always appreciated.

Selling is good. And if you need to do it to sell it, I'm all for it. Besides, my own thylacine isn't much better, but I did it about 10 years ago with no references, and I'm so lazy I haven't been bothered to do another one. *blush*

They're not 'alien' in the sense that they look unnatural, they just don't really resemble dogs to me, not in skeletal structure or anatomy. Anymore than a bandicoot or bilby represents a rabbit. But I'm fussy. :$ *grin*

Korrok In reply to Ravenari [2006-06-02 08:49:59 +0000 UTC]

I agree, they're definitely not canine. I kinda feel a bit crap that this seems to look doggy, as I tried to veer away from that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ravenari In reply to Korrok [2006-06-02 09:41:07 +0000 UTC]

Don't feel crap. It's only the face for me - and it's a very personal thing, because I've spent way too much time in anatomy classes looking at bone structure. I don't think anyone else noticed, because no one else has said anything. I also think it does make the picture far more 'attractive.'

I also don't think the body is overtly doggy at all, and I could tell it was a thylacine straight away because of the colours and the back markings. So it's not like I thought 'what kind of dog is that?'
