Description
Once upon a time, Cuoi had still lived on this earth with us before he went to live on the Moon. He also had a father and a mother like us.

One day, to reward Cuoi for herding buffalo and cutting grass diligently, his mother bought him a very large rice cake. It’s so round and round, thick and filled with sesame on the surface. Cuoi happily held it in his arms, he was singing while walking.

when he went to the edge of the forest, a fat big black bear appeared suddenly. It shouted: “Give me your rice cake now if you want to live! I’m starving!”

Cuoi held the cake, turned around and ran backwards through the fields. He clasped the cake and raised it high. The bear was panting when it almost caught the boy. Luckily a gust blew into the cake and lifted Cuoi high up like a kite.

The gust blew Cuoi high into the sky, over the pinnacles, through the clouds, near to the moon. The banyan tree on the moon dropped a bunch of roots for Cuoi to cling to and climb up.

Since then, Cuoi has lived on the moon, and he often sits under the tree.

On the ground, the bear saw the moon and thought it’s the big rice cake that Cuoi had taken away that day. It swallowed and craved it so much.

One night, the bear determined to climb up to the sky to eat that moon - rice cake. It climbed up the peak, jumped onto a dark cloud, flew with the wind direction toward the moon.

When the shadow of the bear and the dark cloud started to obscure the moon, suddenly there were sounds of banging baskets and panniers from villages on the ground as if pouring rice out to grind or pound. The greedy bear thought: “Wow, if I
come back there, I will get a full meal”.

It jumped out of the cloud, falled down like a boulder. It hit a stump, his bones broken, excruciating pain. It never dares to intend eating the moon again.

As for the moon, it is always bright and round on every full moon night. If you look closely, Cuoi is still sitting by the banyan tree up there. He looks sad. Maybe he ate up his rice cake and he is missing his parents.
