Description JOEL FAN ART ("the last of us")

since i contributed a 2D image for that "itsartmag" contest, i thought it's a good chance to get better in 3D for this one: a 3D sculpt of joel (if you don't know him, you should play more video games!). it is my second ZBrush bust ever, so this one was really time consuming for me. i did one other bust before, and two or three models for a mod, but i am really new to 3D and learn a lot while doing this one. a lot of trial and error, going back and forth etc..

sculpted from a sphere, polypainted textures, all wrinkles and dermal-details are hand-drawn inside ZBrush too.
main hair, eyelashes, beard and eyebrows are fibermeshes (first time usage).
rendered it in ZBrush (since ZBrush is the only 3D software i own), composed the passes in photoshop. hope you like.

That is amazing, I am very interested in seeing your composing images on how you did the layering and different materials to get such a good render! If you want to share ofcourse.Β

thank you! i had a look at maaany free tutorials online,
while doing Joel - learned a lot, since i am not really a
3D pro, especially when it comes to renderings. the few
sculpting skills of me also became a bit rusty over the years,
so yeah: free tutorials - a lot of them on how to render portraits!
I try to come up with something when i've got the time,
hope i still have got the Original files. at least some links.

Hehe, yeah but who are? Look, you've done a really good job here, and you shouldn't quit doing this here, I really think you can go a long way if you keep making art like this. Everyone have to start somewhere And for this being some of your beginner work, you're having a bright future I think. Β

I appreciate that you're taking time to answer your comments. I've tried to gather up a few good tutorials on Pinterest aswell, I'm going to create a whole new character myself over the next few months, so if you have any of those links, that would be awesome!

thanks dude, really appreciate your comment!
i really enjoy 3D and i hope that there's some
more time soon to do another sculpt and get
into it again (almost forgotten everything ).

for the links, i just had a look again... i found
very usefull stuff on www.3dtotal.com
they have a huuuuge free tutorial section, you should
have a look over there if you haven't already!

Hope that helps!

For being so new to Zbrush, you did a fantastic job.

I have not tried fibers before. Β Was it hard to do?

I would like to see a shot of this with working lights. Β The sculpt looks great, but it is really dark.

thank you Kevin! Fibers are tricky, yeah. It took me some time to get them like i wanted to (since main hair, eyelashes, beard and eyebrows needed different settings and shapes). Its a very powerful tool, since you could do anything from leaves to thornes with it my just changing some values, but that's why it's sometimes hard to nail the settings.

there are some tutorials out there that won't cost $$$, just dont make the mistake i did at first and try to do all the main hair at once... do it step by step, use parts and sculpt them.

oh and for this render-image: i wanted it to be so dark, since it fits his inner feelings of joel and the world they have to live in well i guess.
but here's a shot taken inside zbrush with (almost) no textures of the sculpt: s14.directupload.net/images/13…

That sculpt is fantastic. Β It's hard to believe you jumped right into ZBrush and started making high quality work. Β I guess thats the traditional skills paying off. Β

Thanks for showing the screenshots.

I will look into that. Β I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up making the hair from polyplains similar to other game characters, but it would be cool to do what you did, especially if ZBrush doesn't handle transparency maps yet. Β I need to look into that.

You should check out my current character progress and tell me what you think. Β It's a full character and still a WIP. Β

Wenn mehr Leute deine Arbeiten sehen sollen, solltest du dich vielleicht bei Gruppen anmelden und dann sie dann dort einschicken.
Dann sehen viel mehr Leute dein Talent (:
