Yeah, I like the old one better, especially the hand.

Old is gold. I prefer the old one.

I prefer the one on the left, but the one on the right has better anatomy and is also pretty c:

Love the anatomical improvement, but I like the old flowers :]

Me too but I was too lazy to draw them in. Haha. The new flowers were much quicker than the old, detailed ones.

Thanks! I totally understand. The one on the left is a lot more traditional manga style and I know that's what the majority of people on deviantart prefer.

That's probably because I took weeks to do the first one so I took more time on the details. I only took a couple of hours on the second one so I simplified some things, like the blossoms, that I probably would have kept the same in the new one. You're totally right about the scaling of the tree in the early one though. When I was redrawing it I looked at the tree and thought, what was I thinking back then to think that's actually what a tree that scale would look like? lol. As for my style, I still really like manga style but I've been finding that whenever I draw now, it works better if the faces are a bit more realistic.

Agreed, I would definitely still classify most my work as manga.
I would like to start submitting my art to groups but I'm not really sure which ones. Do you have any suggestions for good groups?

Even then, I still think the style you're going for is pretty unique. It looks much more anatomically correct, as opposed to exaggerating certain features. ^^
I've been watching quite a few Manga groups while I'm improving on my own manga skills. One of the easiest ways to find active groups for me is too look at favorite art pieces on the side of the deviation, for groups they're featured in; I've found a lot of nice groups that way. ^_^ Groups usually have tons of affiliates to check out as well.
These are a few nice groups I like to watch. Submission guidelines always vary between groups, so it helps to check out their rules.
<-- Has the highest standards I've seen in a Manga group so far, with over 2,000 watchers, but I doubt you would have any trouble becoming a member; you've got way more than five quality pieces in your gallery. ^^
<-- The new Founder here is great; she's doing her best to spruce the place up.
<-- This group might be a little picky if a submission is too realistic, but it has a lot of watchers and the art submitted is generally good.
<-- Over 12,000 Watchers, and most of the art I see in my watchlist from here is interesting. They accept intermediate art and above, and will give critiques on declined submissions if asked.
<-- Just recently checked out this group; they're a little more lenient than all the above and have over 3,000 watchers.
Sorry for the huge wall of text there. :# A few of these groups might be a good place to start; you may find others you like along the way as well. ^^

I think they're both amazing!
The first one feels more cartoon-like, whereas the second one feels more realistic - almost like you were drawing a cartoon of a real specific person.

That's probably where I've changed the most style wise. I think my people have more relatable expressions now that I have change my style, before they looked frozen.

Great improvement! The hand looks a little off in the 2nd one, but that hair... oh wow, I wish I could color like that.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm not so good at drawing hands without references. I don't think either of them are quite right. Hah.

References are my best friends, so I can understand. How long did it take you to learn how to shade hair like that?

Quite a while to be honest. In early high school I would try to draw everyday with my main focus being females (ergo long hair). It probably took 4 years of really trying to improve before I got to the level of the earlier picture. My pencil colouring skills are pretty much the same as back then with the only real difference being improved colour choices to produce a more natural effect (especially with skin tones).

Thanks for your review it was of great help. (^_^) I followed your advice and tried to fix the arm. I think it looks right now. Anatomy has never been my strong point so I must admit, I thought something was weird with it but I didn't quite know what.

No problems! It is the same with me, I am constantly asking my boyfriend what is off in my work XD Anatomy is hard, I still struggle with it! Keep it up though practice, practice, practice!

I did too back then as well. ^_^ I still like it but my own art style has moved away a little bit from pure anime. I was mainly pleased with the increase in my anatomy skills, they were pretty dodgy in the first one. ~_~
