Description Nothing like moonlit power poles at 2 in the morning....This one would have been longer then an hour and a half, but fog and clouds decided to cut it short for me.

How many frames exactly ? - do you just superimpose one over the other

It was just about 240 exposures of 30 seconds a piece, I then merged them in photoshop cs2 with a script I found online, It automates the process, but I'm pretty sure it does a copy and paste, then a lighten and flatten for each image all applied to the base image.

Theres also a program out there in the internet called startrails.exe. From what I hear it does a good job, but dies after a few hundred shots. If you'd like the script though I can email it to you, its pretty small.

That's really interesting
Perhaps you can just give me the web address, so that I can go & check it out - I can do the download from there.
Thanks for the info

There usually aren't gaps, the shots are back to back with almost no delay, when I do find small gaps though I touch them up with the clone tool and healing brush in photoshop

interesting because even when I take the shot instantaneously after I always get tiny gaps which show in 18x12 prints very clearly. I know others have expresienced this too but I am at a loss to explain why it hapens anyway when the gap between exposures is only about 0.5seconds.

Odd, how are you combining them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alex37 In reply to Koloski [2007-09-05 21:47:14 +0000 UTC]

Either multiply or lighten. It not a function of how I combine them, its the frames themselves. At first I thought it was processing but after turning all sharpening off in the RAW converter the problem persists. The gaps are slight (not complete gaps actually, more like dents) but they are noticeable.

With a lot of caffeine

Its actually very easy, find a location and wait till the sky is nice and clear, then just take a few hundred 30 second exposures back to back and layer them in photoshop

This is beautiful! It's amazing how much the stars move in a fairly short amount of time...you must have been extremely patient to capture this. Congratulations on getting a DD for your other star tracking photo - I think this one is the best, though.

It's really not too bad waiting around for a few hours, just need to bring some friends along and make sure no one uses a flashlight in front of the camera
