You know, Kodo's eyes weren't always black...
so I'll tell you what happened:

a few days after Jol's death, Kodo's parents were angry at her for no reason... her second little sister was there to help her but after some time, Kodo's mother Kagi made Kodo so angry that she could no longer control her demon. ...and she set her house on fire...and after some time Kodo was found and placed in an orphanage when she was 15...her eyes were normal when she was in the orphanage but Onosa kept coming back...and after several pulses, Onosa regained control...by setting fire to a place again...

Kodo ran away and decided to lead her own life after that... even though she was sad, she decided to stop thinking about the past and now she smiles all the time!
