Description So, this is a piece where I decided to draw a particular pose and then tried to come up with a background that would work with it... and I need to stop doing that. So I wound up with Supergirl sitting on a rooftop ledge looking over the bay, with the sun behind her. And that last detail also wreaked havoc with how I handle shade and shadows and the like, so I have no idea where this rates on the scale of "well done" to "dude, seriously?" But that being said, I really do like it.

If you have any thoughts or critiques, especially in coming up with and executing decent backgrounds, I'm all ears and would be appreciative.

-------------------------------

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll generally adjust the ‘value’ portion of the HSV setting to make the base color lighter or darker; I’m unable to ‘cool’ shadows by adding blue or anything like that. I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

-------------------------------

Supergirl is, of course, property of DC Comics.

Hey, I'm here from ProjectComment .

First off, I really love this! She is so pretty, and the shading style really looks great! The fact that you're colorblind makes this even better, as it shows that you had to put a lot more effort into making it look right.
There are a couple of flaws that I can see, however. Mostly, The problem I have is with the positioning of the character. Her neck seems oddly tilted, and it almost looks slightly unnatural. It gives me a bit of a neck cramp just looking at it, but I actually don't believe that the flaw is in the neck itself, but rather in the positioning of the shoulders. However, the shoulder placement is odd because the arm placement is odd. Both arms look really stiff and oddly positioned. Stand in front of a mirror and try to strike this pose, and see exactly how uncomfortable it feels. It looks like you were attempted to make it look like she was walking, but the arm would not be that tucked behind the body in that case; instead, it would be farther away from it. I'm honestly not sure what the other arm is doing, but in any case, both arms look out of place and give the picture an odd, stiff feeling. You might want to look up some references on how arms and shoulders are positioned in such poses, or try using a mirror to use yourself as a reference.
The second issue I have is actually with the shading. While this is great shading, and I love it, I feel like it could of used a couple of of deeper shadows. Namely, a shade of darker blue along the side of the body without the lighting, a darker shade of red for the bottom of the cape, a slightly darker shading for the neck underneath the jawline, and then perhaps some general darker shadows for the hair, to give it a more 3D feel. However, this is just an idea, and while it might add an extra layer of depth to the image, this particular picture still looks pretty great the way it is.
All in all, I love this picture. It needs work, yes, but it is still great! I especially love the little cities in the back; for some reason that looks really amazing. I hope that my comment was helpful, and that you'll continue to make great artwork!

Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment -- I really appreciate it!

I'll try to keep the shading idea in mind in the future -- I'm actually going to experiment with some greyscale work this weekend to see how that turns out. But at the moment, even when I try to be bolder with my shadows, I tend to pull up short of where I should be. I'll keep trying to stretch myself, though.

As far as her pose goes, it may be my fault for not really conveying her pose -- she's supposed to be leaning backward a bit, resting on her arms off to the side and coyly looking up at the 'camera'. I tried to have a few building rooftops in the background so it was clear you were looking down somewhat, rather than straight on, but they just didn't work out at all. (I'd provide a link to the original image I used as inspiration, but it's nsfw).

That said, I should be able to convey the ideas I have without needing to explain them, so I have to get better at that.

Thank you, again!

^^ Greyscale is a great way to practice drawing shadows, that's for sure.

Hmm...I can sort of see what you are talking about, but the way that the 'camera' is angled doesn't really give off that impression at all. xD It's not bad, but you might want to practice foreshortening. I'm sure you'll get better with practice, though. :3

Hello! I want to say this is amazing. And you're colorblind!? Oh my god, you must be so talented!
I guess there could be more shading, but don't worry, I understand it must be really hard to be colorblind.
Maybe you could've made some hair streaks, it would give it a really cool effect!
Her right arm is a bit distorted, though. Like, the diamond shape gives it a queer shape. Also I feel like her arms are a bit too thin.
The background nice as well! The ocean's beautiful.
Apart from that, everything's awesome! Nice job, this is definitely a masterpiece!

Thank you for taking the time to comment, and for the very kind compliments.

The amount of shading is definitely something that has always hindered me -- at a certain point, the colors begin to look like something different to me (like her flesh tones will at some point just look orange to me) even if they look okay to someone else, so I'm always hesitant to push the envelope very much, even if I should. That's kind of frustrating.

You're right about the diamond shape of her arm -- I'm not even sure why I left it that sharp. I'll chalk it up to the comic book style I usually aim for for now, but it's something I'll keep an eye on in the future.

Thank you, again!

Great work!
Just some things i noticed
How the cape flows back.. that looks a bit weird. maybe go through some reference pics of supergirl or heroes with capes and see how the capes flow to get a better idea.. In this piece the cape loos really small like it wouldnt even reach her waist
For the shading, try removing the line work or if you want to keep the line work, try making it a little more dynamic using varied lineweights. Try going through www.jacquelindeleon.com/portfo… . An awesome artist . the way she does her linework is amazing
The reason I'm telling u to dump the linework is coz we never see lines on our face, there are only different tones coming together. those lines that you think you see are a lot of tones tightly packed in an area. If you go through realistic rendering you'll understand better
The shading is very neat but a bit flat.
May I suggest working in grayscale first if you're red-green colorblind? Basically you color the whole piece in grayscale, so you dont have to worry about hues just values. Once u have a satisfactory result in greyscale, make a layer above it and set it to multiply. then u just have to add one color and since u have a layer undernearth with all the values, you'll automatically get the hues to vary accordingly
A basic way of doing that! www.youtube.com/watch?v=zurMZ9…
Lots of great tutorials on youtube!

Anyway this is really well done! Super girl looks really cute and the background works for me! I hope I was able to help and have a great day

Thank you for taking the time to comment, and for providing the tutorial links -- the greyscale trick sounds interesting. I'll definitely play around with that a bit to see what I can do with it.

I also have to get a hang of varying lineweights... I seem to keep missing out on that despite trying to do it. I think my brain has a hard time wrapping itself around the idea of not being consistent.

Thank you! And in some costumes the S does connect, but in her most recent Rebirth one, which I based this on (at least color-wise), it doesn't.  (tinyurl.com/y8kqxewr )

DeadEndSeries [2017-07-25 01:40:11 +0000 UTC]

I got pretty damn excited when I saw this in my notifications this morning, I'm not gonna lie. Ever since I saw your Barb and Kara piece a while back I'd been hyped for you to draw her again. (I'm not sure if you were intentionally aiming for a certain version but she looks hardcore earth-two version here, which is my fave besides 38)
I'm one of those few people that read the comics and still shamelessly enjoys the CW show. (Melissa Benoist is wife material) and this really brings back some OG nostalgia from my more in-depth comic book days. The eyes are fantastic, which is wholly integral to her entire look  (because we all know kryptonians are at least 50% pretty eyes, 20% shoulders and 30% magnificent hair) and I think you've superbly demonstrated this ratio here, she's stunning.
The only thing I could suggest for improvement would be the addition of some more detailed lines in the hair and suit, but on the other hand, if you added lines to her hair it might look a little less soft and majestic than what you've managed to depict here, and the earth-two supersuit was a pretty basic spandex-looking material so I suppose all selections were called for.

As for the background I really enjoy the whole rooftop overlooking the bay idea. It's (as the person above me said) ambitious and it gives us a break from the constant fan adaptions of national city default backdrops.
Fantastic work, Kevin.

Thank you! Knowing you're a fan of her makes it mean even more that this doesn't disappoint.

I'll be honest -- my knowledge of Supergirl is fairly limited compared to the affection I have for her (I set out to learn all about her a few years ago, but, after five minutes of reading up on her convoluted history, decided to wait until DC figured out what the heck to do with her). I wouldn't be able to tell you which Earth version is which; I just know I love Michael Turner's interpretation of her in Superman/Batman Vol. 2 "Supergirl" and think Melissa Benoist is wife material, too (though I'd have loved to see a high school version of the character for the show since it'd have been so different from the other shows). I based this picture on the first volume trade of her Rebirth series (tinyurl.com/y8kqxewr )  since I just read it a couple of weeks ago. The angle of that particular panel may have lead me to miss any lines on her costume. But if it's not a deal breaker for you, I'll be okay with it, too.

I think you're right about the lines for her hair, too. That's something I need to keep working on -- the lines I make within the hair I draw are always stiff and too straight. Using the blender makes it easier because the lines are far more forgiving and easily manipulated (for me). Maybe I just need to start using the same care I do for the outer lines.

And I get what you're saying about her eyes being important -- The whole time I worked on this I kept thinking that if I didn't get them right, the rest of it wouldn't mean crap.
