The Wishing Staff figured in the animated series where it grew to battering ram size and smashed out walls of a castle, The hero grew so headstrong & sure of himself that it took Buddha himself to break him and imprison him under a heavy mountain ! Buddha's unlimited power was well portrayed !

Thor once fought the personification of old age and death. I'm sure he can handle this guy. Specially if it's Scandinavian epic version of thor.

Well, said snake was destined to kill him, so he did have fate itself against him. He's smarter then most people think, too!

This. All this. If a mythological hero loses to someone/something, it's usually because that one/thing is even more op than op.

Didn't he single handedly beat down all of Heaven's Army until the Buddha came to stop him? Freaking Boss he was. Just a badass made flesh, not even his facets and beings who were inspired by him are as cool as he was, the very original.

He did! It made the second half of the story kind of boring, I mean after he kicked asses of all the major gods what difficulty would he have with some minor demons and obstacles in their way xP

It is epic and yeah I do agree, it feels like a scenario where the best and most exciting parts happen in the beginning before the end but of course it is a story about humility, and granted a really good one. He does learn to become stronger through enlightenment and character and even becoming A/The God of Victory which is always cool.
But yeah, still hard to beat the start where Wukong flies to the edge of Literal Everything and pees on Buddha's hand only to be hurled to a Magic Mountain XD

I think the author generally found Buddhism to be the BEST way to live your life given how Buddha was written as the BE-ALL/END-ALL of Deities. From what I've read (As a Chinese dude myself) and heard, the Jade Emperor was a representative of Confucianism and Lao Tzu of Taoism. Neither one of those guys were depicted as being effective against SuKong, not even close until Buddha came. In fact, many of those individuals did not clash well with our favorite monkey, it was only until Buddha trapped him under a Mountain and had him take a quest in helping him gain some humility did Sukong learn to be a better person.
So basically in Journey to the West The Buddha is #1.

Yeah, most of his depictions I've seen feature him with human-like posture just with monkey face. that's not something I wanted to go for.)
