The homecoming dance was finally here and the whole school was abuzz with anticipation. Most of the students supported Starfruit’s campaign for homecoming queen and they all knew it. Starfruit herself was glowing as she hobbled around the dance floor in her crutches, being showered with well wishes and sympathy from all her peers. It was only a matter of time until she got her crown.

But Saltwater Taffy knew differently.

She had done what she needed to do and switched out the votes, and not a single soul knew about it. The crown was rightfully hers and she couldn’t wait to see the look on Starfruit’s face when it was placed upon her.

“Attention, attention! It’s time to announce the Homecoming Court!”

The whole room went quiet as the staff announcer made her speech, going in unnecessary detail about the school’s values and whatnot—typical teacher stuff—before naming the winners. Taffy hardly listened as she read off the Homecoming Prince, Princess, or King—none of it mattered to her until she got to the Queen.

“Now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for! There was a little more competition than usual for this role, but everypony put in their all and you should be proud of yourselves! Without further ado, the title of Homecoming Queen goes to…”

A drumroll sounded from the band as the announcer opened up an envelope, but when she opened it up her eyes widened in surprise as if the results were as shocking to her as they were about to be to everypony else.

“Uh—“

She quickly gained her composure and plastered on a smile.

“Saltwater Taffy!”

“YES! YES!”

Taffy practically soared through the air, cheering and laughing as if this was the happiest surprise of her life instead of a meticulously-planned scheme. As the plastic crown was placed on her head, she felt as if she were being crowned the Queen of Equestria. She had never felt more powerful.

The young hippogriff mare was so in her head that she felt as if everypony had erupted in cheers for her, but in reality most of the applause she got was forced and halfhearted. Starfruit and her friends could guess what she did but now it was too late, and there was no evidence to prove their hunch anyway.

Saltwater Taffy had won. She cheated and lied but still she got exactly what she wanted.

She looked over to the disgraced loser, who looked like she was about to cry as her friends did their best to comfort her. The nice thing they’d tried to do for their friend had failed miserably but Taffy didn’t care at all. They shouldn’t have dared to challenge her in the first place.

“So sorry! Better luck next time!”

Taffy laughed mockingly and flipped her mane at them. Her apology didn’t mean anything at all and both parties knew it. With her arrogant tone and flippant behavior, she might as well have been saying…

“In your face, bitches!”
