Description ---

It was a brilliant day, awake with the promise of spring, and the following of summer. The birds perched in the trees that surrounded the Red&Sky estate, and sang their little fluttering hearts out for all the world to hear, and deer bellowed to their does, gathering them together. The sun chased the clouds slowly across the sky overhead, disappearing into their midst when it caught up. Horses nickered in their stalls, shuffling and whuffling in the straw and hay, making those comforting equine sounds that everyone loves. Paper Money dozed in the corner, her sleepy posture unsuited to her young age. Ebbalakier, the hanoverian mare who was excelling in her training, had her face in her feed bowl, licking out the last scraps. Idoled was receiving sought after attention from one of the grooms, pushing her brow into his hand and relishing in every pat. Many of the stalls were empty, awaiting mares to come and inhabit them, a prospect that was both exciting and a little daunting for the staff.

A stallion's call rang out across the yard, and snaked its way into the barn. Paper shot her head up, ears pricked, and surveyed the area cautiously, then resumed her rest just as quickly as she had broken it. The others paid no heed to Infiltrate's summons, and continued their activities undeterred.

One mare was missing out of the four. Oh No!, the stable's most recent addition, was away, standing outside the breeding paddock in the cool breeze. She fumbled with her halter and tossed her oddly marked head; to the sarcastic amusement of Robert Fox, the breeding manager.

"Be still, Etta," he placed a palm on her nose, quieting her. She could smell the stallion, he knew it. Best not to let her do...much, actually, in case she hurt herself, as she was known to do. Her first covering, ever, on this day. It held for Robert a nervousness in the pit of his stomach. He hated the first time, and would have insisted that for this mare they use AI, if not for strict thoroughbred ruling that prevented the process. He exhaled, and patted her neck. Gold Bullet would have to be careful - she had boots on, but who knew how she would react?

"Ready?!" The cry rang out from around the corner of the stallion barn to where Fox clutched the lead rein. He nodded, then remembered that nodding was in no way vocal, and replied affirmatively. The golden stallion was led around the bend and into full view, his rippling shoulders and flanks instantly tensing at the sight of such a mare, and his already pricked ears straining for a higher peak. A soft whicker escaped from his velvet lips, and it was answered by a snort from Etta. DD's magnificent stallion now attempted to pull the rope from his groom's hands, but to little success, and he had to content himself with walking at a calm and steady rate towards the gate.

"You think she's ready, then?" The American accent of the Double Dance groom stuck out vividly amongst the British, as he questioned the mare's receptivity.

"'Course she is - she's been tested this morning. With luck we'll have it all done and dusted this afternoon and we'll have one pregnant mare, and one very happy stallion." He glanced at the stallion who matched Etta in height, as he tried another pull towards the other, but was held by three eager grooms. "Uh, we'd better let them get down to business, then."

Robert was funny, since he never said the word "sex" or "mating". He used typical English phrases to cover his discomfort. It was a fact that appeared in many light hearted jokes around the place. He ran his hand through his dark brown hair and released the bolt on the gate, kicking it open as he did so, and leading the accident-prone mare through. He unclipped her headcollar and retreated to the fence, slipping through it and watching as the experienced American set the palomino thoroughbred on his way.

Gold Bullet wasted no time in attempting to seduce Oh No!, but was met by a mildly amused and interested stare each time. He bided his time, growing more and more impatient; flicking his mane above his crest, cavorting around Etta in a circle, and also displaying a strangely postured flehmen response. He tried to mount her several times, but Etta merely avoided each of his advances towards her hind - skipping away as if she'd never injured her leg, but thankfully refraining from striking out. Robert pressed his hands into his face, cursing the silly mare. Trust that horse, who'd given him such trouble over the year she'd been at R&S, to be tricky now. It was clear in her eyes that she knew exactly what she was expected to do, but was going to make them wait.

Thirty-three and a half minutes later, the birdcatcher spotted mare was successfully covered by the flashy golden stallion.

*Hazel-rah 's Gold Bullet X my Oh No!

I'm afraid you're going to have to pretend that Gold's on a tour of Britain and Europe, or something, since the stallion has just been to see the mare.

Oh wahoowwwww, an amazing piece. You should be very proud of that background, its so well done, I love it! I love the poses and expressions on the horses too. You asked critique but I wont fill out the form I'll just mention something there. Perhaps you should try finding a brush that would allow you to do more realistic looking spots for Oh No. Or try to not make them as clean looking (I dont link horses have just perfectly round spots) Anyway, thats it and I really really love your background.

Actually, BC spots sometimes come in perfectly round, stark spotties.

I've been putting off replying to your lovely comment to find the right words to say. I guess thank you covers it, but I honestly can't thank you enough for your support and constructive crit. I plan on going back and improving it when I have the time, and I will definitely work on her spots. I think by hand would be the best technique, but I'll play around and see how realistic I can get it.

Awe, thank you for your response. I totally ment everything I said because your bg inspired me to work harder on mine. lol Markings like that are really tough though. It helps me when I find a textured brush I can kinda use to do the hard work for me.
