Okay, so this is a story element of mine.

First off, breaking a gem is a death sentence on the planet this takes place on. (The gems give people powers/life energy, and cracking them leads to injury/death.) The MC, Taya, started an uprising that lead to a field of broken shards, that is blamed entirely on her, and not her former family, the nobles she was opposing in the uprising.
As she is captured, and thrown into jail as a POW, she is given the title of "Gem Breaker" and ridiculed by the givernment and the citezens alike as a murderer. She is jeered at and is going to be publicly executed, until Della rescues her, sacrificing her own life for Taya's in hopes that her race will be freed if Taya lived to be the next ruler...
