Yeah, that's the real paradox. From the very start you were so near the actual end and with all your search you were just getting more distant from it.
On the other side if you just go there from start, it would be the end of your incarnation.
Still, Morte is great character, I love how he is hiding sadness of his love behind cheerful comments

He may have known the location of the portal, but he had no idea of what the key was nor was he certain that *that* place was the Fortress of Regrets you were looking for. As he stated, that particular incarnation wasn't the sort to spread the dark of the matter to anyone much less Morte. All Morte knew for certain was that it was the place where the most successful incarnation he'd known got his arse handed to him.
